View Full Version : Building New computer need help inside....
Ok I have decided to build my first computer.
My idea
ASUS "P4C800-E DELUXE" i875P Chipset Motherboard for Intel Socket 478 CPU
Intel Pentium 4/ 3.4C GHz 800MHz FSB, 512K L2 Cache, Hyper Threading Technology
Rosewill 184-Pin 512MB DDR PC-2700, Model RW333/512
Vga Nvidia Geforce 6800 GT
Another 512 DDR ram off old computer
80 gb HD from old computer
Same for all the Rom drives
This Seem like a good idea??

nope, PC2700 is not gonna cut it on the 3.4C that thing is 800FSB while ur ram is 333FSB
What's this computer gonna used mainly for?
If your gonna do gaming mostly I would suggest you get an A64 for a better "bang for your buck" deal.
The DFI NF3 250 LanParty is the best mobo out right now and if you pair it up with an A64 3200+ it's gonna be performing as good or better than a P4 3.2 especially if you overclock it.
And as warlock said your gonna need new memory (PC-3200 at least) for your P4 setup which that ram can also be used with the A64 ;)
If you're planning on overclocking it, I'd spend less on the processor and get like a 3.0C or a 3.2C and then use the leftover money to get some nicer ram. I'd say the minimum speed that I would recommend would be DDR466 ( PC3700) on a 800FSB processor. When you're oc'ing, the slower ram will crap out really fast.
I'd get this for the cpu
P4 3.0C (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-156&depa=1)
and something like this for the memory
OCZ EL PC4000 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-146-933&depa=1)
It's usually better to spend less on the cpu and more on the ram and mobo.... those will allow you to oc a lot higher than a fast cpu and crap mobo and ram.
BTW, I'm not saying your mobo is crap.... just spend a good amount of money on the mobo and ram if you're planning on oc'ing.
Do research in the forums, look at reviews online, and then buy. Good Luck :)

Sid, that is one slightly creepy avatar. Not that I can say anything though ;) :D
A few notes:
What PSU are you using? I would recommend a good brand name 400 or 450W PSU to power that system.
As mentioned, aim to get PC3200 RAM otherwise you will not get the full potential out of your CPU.
What speed is the other 512MB RAM you are going to use? If it is slower than PC3200 I would recommend selling it to part fund new RAM. Get two equal sized/speed sticks of RAM where possible to improve performance by taking advantage of the dual channel feature of your system
ok I understand now. Not gunna use the old ram it a PC2100. Money not a problem I live at home so this project I have all fall to make thie computer. I was getting a new tower with 480watt power supply. This computer gunna be gaming computer. And I will be doing some overclocking during Benchmark test only and not gunna go very high.
If you're planning on gaming, then overclocking is even more useful b/c that's basically the only thing where you see the difference other than benchmarks.
If you have a 3.0C at 3.4 it will be faster than a 3.4C b/c the FSB on the 3.0C will be higher.... if you're ram is still running 1:1 with the cpu, your ram will be overclocked and give you better performance gaming as well. When you get down to it, there's no reason not to overclock... you get better performance with no extra cost.
WOOT!!! 7 STARS!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D
One more question then what cards out there have PCI express?
One more question then what cards out there have PCI express?
Do you mean what motherboard's have PCI-X on them or what cards use it?
There's a whole slew of mobo's with one PCI-X 16x and several PCI-X 1x slots and then usually 3 normal PCI slots ( the 16x is reserved for the graphics card... the 1x's are for normal components like Gigabit LAN cards, but still offers huge bandwidth).
Newegg has a bunch of PCI-X compatible motherboards if you're curious.
Now if you're wondering what components out there use PCI-X..... then there's.
1) Graphics cards (very expensive right now, the X800XT is like 650 dollars)
2) Like I said above, Gigabit LAN cards and Sound cards eventually. USB and Firewire I'm sure will make good use of that bandwidth.
Now one thing to think about is the fact that most mobo's with PCI-X also require you to buy DDR-2, which is not cheap. When you add up all the other components, you're going to be spending a lot of money to get this stuff. Personally, I'm going to wait a few years for more components to come out and the prices to drop... not enough performance change to make me what to switch over now.

Well My computer is 2 years old it is an HP. I'm hitting bottleneck wit hthe motherboard b/c the agp slot is only 4x. I own a VGA Nvidia 6800 GT. I know this card can work with PCI Express. Money is no problem for me. Thank you for the info.

ASUS "P5GD1" 915P Chipset Motherboard For Intel LGA 775 CPU
Intel LGA 775 Pentium 4 540 3.2 GHz, 800MHz FSB, 1MB L2 Cache w/ Hyper Threading Technology
Would this be a good set up......
