Greetings....

First question.....What is the ideal voltage for an AMD 1 ghz Thunderbird (not overclocked at all)?

2) What is the ideal operating temperature of this chip?

I ask these questions because soon after boot, my cpu temp jumps to around 50 c......to me, this doesnt seem normal. I tried lowering my voltage to 1.75v....same thing. It's running right now at 1.75v and it seems stable so far. I will leave it on and do tests and such.

Anyway, thank you in advance.....I'll appreciate any help!

Oh yes, and also....i took off my heatsink, inspecting if it was on wrong, and discovered the cpu smeared with thermal compound. It's everywhere, not only on the core. Should I clean this off? If so, with what?

Thanks again...ill be awaiting a response

How ever low you can set it without it becoming unstable, use prime95 to test stability.

2) What is the ideal operating temperature of this chip?

As low as possible, at 1ghz a temp under 40oC would be a good target with some case cooling, and a good cpu cooler

As for the thermal compound being everywhere you are right that should be cleaned off, just be careful in doing so.
What cpu cooler do you have and what case coling do you have?

I have a blue orb on the cpu....

Case cooling.....next to none....my case is open right now on both sides. I'm in my basement, and the windows are open. I'd say that by the floor the temp is about 55 f.

So far i got it down to 1.75 v...last night i tried 1.65 and i had to reset my bios because it wouldnt even boot...

Im at 50c idle.

What should i use to clean the compound off?

thanks a million for your help!

DID YOU SAY A BLUE ORB ON THAT 1GHZ????
AND YOUR ONLY GETTING 50ºC???

How is it your computer hasn't set on fire????

No offense intended, this is just dangerious though.

A Blue Orb is a CHIPSET cooler. It is not intended to be put on a CPU CORE. You need to change to a decent SocketA cooler quickly!

argh....i didnt mean THE blue orb...

i meant its an orb....and it's blue in color (well actually, it's more on the purple side)...i dont know the exact model ....the sink is about an inch high, and the fan is running at 4800 rpm.

after running prime95 at 100 percent processor usage for 5 minutes, my cpu went to 53c.....again, idle is 50c

this isnt normal....should i change my cooler? should i utelize more efficent case cooling? what should i do?

OH thanks, this was about to become a historical comical post :)

Right, for one even high end ORBs are inadequate for Ghz+ processors. Another thing is that you might have false readings coming from your thermal diode. On the other hand it could be that it is very accurate in which case your mobo temp would read it at 45ºC (ish). This temp would be high but not cooking.

I recommend upgrading your hsf to something a little more efficient. You dont have to go overkill and get a good heatsink with a delta (38cfm). But I would recommend an all copper heatsink such as the SK-6. A good fan would help temps too (anything around 25cfm).

First of all I would suggest changing the cooler then think of cooling the case more...

to clean off the compound some kind of alchohol is best, nail polish remover is great and cheap. Sounds like a dragon orb what your using, they aren't bad and are good enough for 1ghz.
Are you planning on overclocking? if not then 50oC is ok though not ideal for 1ghz.
what heat transfer compound do you use?

well, my mobo temp reading is 28c.....i was thinking the same thing, my cpu temp sensor may be faulty. I hope this is so....

Thanks for all the feedback, I'm going to go out and get a new cooler!

Ok, I just had a box fan blowing into my case for 10 minutes, which brought the cpu down to 41c.

This temperature seems highly unprobable, since many of you guys have overclocked machines running at that same temperature at max load.

Therefor, I am inclined to believe that my cpu temp sensor is out of whack, which is a great relief.

A 1:2 mobo:cpu temp ration seems unlikely also, adding to the proof of the faulty sensor.

Anyway, I am not shure about my thermal compound, but it is blue in color. I am not planning to oc anytime soon.

In the meantime, i think I may pick up a handhelt temp sensor from radio shack and check my cpu temp. I will also clean off the excess compound from my cpu.

Thanks a lot for all your help!

If you are currently using an in socket thermister which only reads the temp of the back of the cpu then chances are the results are incorrect. It's quite common for them to either be higher than the actual temp of the cpu, a senfu probe is a great way of measuring the temp and very accurate for it's price, l use one and have no complaints
