I remember that happening with DirectX 6.1
It's shoddy programming from Microsoft. Go to their site and search for it, should be a fix.
I have searched and serached
but no luck...
What build?
Try 682.

It means your running a beta version of directX and it has reached it's expiration date. Beta versions of directX have a certain date on which they expire and give you this message. You can install a newer version of directx to correct this or you can try to remove this version of directX and install an older non-beta version but removal of directX isn't always possible and may mess up your system. Another thing that you might be able to do is simply set the date on your system back to a time when this version of directX was still functional. Of course that means your date will be wrong and may not be recommended. Anyway, this is one of the reasons I don't recommend using Beta versions of directX unless your a beta tester or a developer and are testing an application. This sometimes applies to betas of other microsoft products as well like beta operating systems. They will often expire and quite working after a ceratin date.

You can't install a non beta version over the beta version. I have tried it and that does not work. I did a quick search on the internet and was able to find a newer version of 8.1 than what I had. That version is 648. Since you cannot uninstall it then maybe try setting your BIOS clock back a little and see if that helps at all.

I saw something like this posted else where on the fourm so I though I would add the same I did there..
You'll need to download the latest direct x version from m$ and install it, you can get it right from this link here

Yes, but check the version number on that latest version you linked to. It's 8.0a. He has a beta version of 8.1. You can't install an older version of directX over a newer version. It won't allow you to. Hence, his predicament. So, any newer version he can install will be a beta version. So, unless he installs another beta version, which will again expire at some later date, he needs to try to remove directx from his system, if possible, and then install the previous final release version (8.0a) that you linked to. In the end he may wind up having to reformat and reinstall windows. I think there are a few prgrams that are suppose to try to remove directX from a win9x installation, but I'm not sure how safe they are. Anyway, if he's running some flavor of win9x he might try that. On the other hand if he's running win2k then I don't think he can remove directX with one of those programs. If he's running win2k he'll have to reinstall or do a system restore or something like that.
This is one of the reasons betas are only meant for beta testers and develops. Either them or those who enjoy reformating their harddrives and reinstalling windows.

Thanks to that little fela right there I was able to uninstall the direct x 8.1 beta.
So far it has worked like a charm...even seems to have made my system more stable than before....I had Directx 8.0a d/led in a backup folder so I installed from there.
Also they are even making a version for W2k...
Thats good considering I may get Windows 2k tommrow (sunday)
Wish me luck...
Now to backup all my stuff...
