I read this article: http://pc.ign.com/articles/550/550702p1.html on ign.com. It says what will be in the $80 Collector's Edition of HL2 (which I knew). It mentions CS:S and HL:S as being included in the Collector's Edition. Will these come with the regular version of the game too? I think they do, but does anyone know for sure?

I was in Gamestop today picking up Rome Total War and I pre-orded the regular version of HL2, although the guy asked me if I wanted the Collector's Edition or the Regular Edition.

Im definatly going to get the special edition.

I want HL Source, and i want the game on DvD, might as well spend the extra.

Why is the T-Shirt only in extra large though? that sucks.

Is CS:S included on the non-collector's edition of the game? (54.99 version). If so, I'll pass on the guide and the T-shirt :)

Yes, CS:S is included with the normal HL2. The Prima Book actually looks to be a cool book. Its not a guide for a game, but more of a story behind the making of the games. Along with like 300 pictures.

I would never ever pay $80 for a game im just so sick about the delays this game had all i care about is beating it 1 or 2 times then letting it collect dust in the stack of games i have right on top of Doom3.

But you'll spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars, making a mamchine to play them.

Yea i play Ut2k4 alot Bf1942, Farcry, Star wars JkA, CC Gen ect. Doom3's multiplayer sucks and single player was boring after i first beat it.

I spend my money as i please and the stacks of games i have iv eitherp layed for weeks on end or i played for a week and set it aside.

WOO!!! Give Gabe your $80 so he can replenish his cheetos supply and delay the game another year!

Only if it comes in DVD and the regular version doesn't.

Actually right now. VU and Valve are in a heated lawsuit battle over hl2 and steam and all that. But i would expect VU to want to get hl2 out the door because they stand to loose just as much if they delay hl2 any more.

What kind of f*ed up backwards company is making this game? the publisher and developer are in the middle of a lawsuit and trying to get this game out the door at the same time!??! FFS atleast take the game to another publisher till the lawsuit gets worked out.

I, in a way, feel sorry for both of the companies, but more so for Valve. Granted that some of the delay was their fault, some of the delay was not under their control. Note that at this point, since the RC is at Vivendi, it's their responsibility to make it happen.

I do think, however, that they need to be cut some slack-- this coming from a guy who is as anxious as all the rest of you. They are, after all, trying really hard to make an awesome game, and I think it will be just that, in very many ways.

If they don't release by X-mas I'm gonna be very pissed off. All the high end hardware I've bought will be for nothing.

80 dollars for a "special edition" is a bit steep if you ask me. If this game is expected to be a giant hit and doesn't require official servers, etc. then why does it cost so damned much. Talk about being greedy as all hell. I'll wait for the price to come down to a more reasonable amount.

I think it comes in some sort of tin, it includes a T-shirt ($10), the actual game ($50), HL:S and a book (about $30) all in an $80 package.

Ah, that makes a lot more sense, athough the t-shirt that you are paying for should actually come in your size :P.

Does the regular version come with HL:S? Argh, why must it be so confusing!?!

special editions are not supposed to be a bargain... they are made for people who really want the game and are that extra little bit obsessed or excited. deal or not, people who want them will buy them

WTF is this source BS i keep hearing about. Are they including the source code for HL2 with the game?

kaltag
09-25-04, 05:40 PM
The engine used for HL2 is called "source". Therefore CS:S syands for Counter Strike: Source. It's Counterstrike based on the source engine which provides much improved graphics and physics.

Id say that more than likely you can dl HL:S off steam, but i cant guarentee that.

That would make sense. $50 should give someone all the content they deserve, you shouldn't have to pay $80.

I'll just be getting the regular version. Don't think I'm gonna pre-order it since we STILL don't know the release date. I'll just pick it up somewhere. I had no problem getting a copy of Doom 3.

I'd only get the Collector's Edition if it included a crowbar.

Tatuya

The nice thing about not preordering is that you can get the game at the store that has it first and for the cheapest. Preordering a game like HL2 is really not needed as every store stocking it will have tons and tons of copies.

I suppose I am mostly referring to the events last fall. When a third of a game is stolen, a lot of security and rewriting has to be implemented to ensure the safety of that game data.

Think, suppose the game had been released on schedule, and a week after it's out there are unpreventable cheats because some blokes can write them from the source code.

Granted, I know not a lot about programming. But I know that the theft of the source code was a very, very serious setback.

I figured you were referring to this, but I can't fathom how you consider that not to be Valve's fault. Internal security is the responsibility of the developer.

I hate when companies gouge consumers with Collectors Editions, because people want DVDs instead of multiple CDs.

 Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. And Gabe Newell should rot in hell because he's an inept net admin. True, they SHOULD have had better security, but it's not like Gabe said, "Hey! My networks got a huge security hole!! Why don't any of you ******** just waltz right in and take whatever you want off our servers." Give me a break dood... you can't put that on Newell... he's an idiot when it comes to network security, but blame the ****** that stole the code... not the guy who wrote it.

Read my post again: I never said that the code stealers were not also at fault. That was never part of the discussion. But the bottom line is that Valve is the only party to blame for their lacking security. In the developer world, if you allow security gaps, you will get burned - it's a given. It is lucidrous to suggest that a developer should be held unaccountable for security; that was my orignal point, and you have acknowledged my point in your own post by stating that "they should have had better secuity". However, just like the previous poster I quoted, I simply cannot fathom how you believe that that responsibility does not lie with Valve.

(It does not help Valve's case that Gabe Newell's account on hl2fallout.com was also hacked a few weeks ago - apparently because he was using the password "gaben". Good going, security!)

I worked as an IT manager at a large university for a few years and my department did a lot of coding for proprietary software. I can assure you that, had a security breach on the level of Valve's occured, there would be many heads rolling. Source code exposure just does not happen on this level.

All very true... but how are you gonna fire the founder/CEO of a company??? :p All I'm saying is, give the idiot a break. Sure, he's an imbicile for not locking down his network properly (or hiring somebody who knows how to), but... aw to hell w/ it all. "Gabe, rot in hell!" :p

I'm going to play through HL: Source before I start HL2. So yes, I will shell out the extra cash for the Collector's Edition. It's on DVD too and has a t-shirt. That's plenty for me.

Have fun with the Collector's Edition :)
