View Full Version : How good is CH-5?

Hi I just checked my Kingston Value RAM and it says
W942508CH-5
50322W1430
632400
Does that mean it is a Winbond CH-5 Chip?
How good is that?
What volt can I go with that?
Do I need RAMsink?
Can I get 2-2-2-5or6 with that?
You'd get probably around 230MHz with 3-3-2 timings. That's whats typical for CH5. Usually no more than 3v does anything. Some lucky ones can do 2-2-2 and take some higher volts, but that's very rare.
yeah sorry dood, ch5 is a bit disappointing compared to BH-5, good luck with the oc though.

some hyperx and the corsair low latency series uses CH-5 tho
wt r the differences?
By "low latency," they usually mean lower than 4-4-3, but not much lower.

I think what his trying to say is CH-5 are good but not as good as BH-5 :D

i hv 2-3-3-7 now (SPD: 2.5-3-3-8)
but if i set to 2-2-2-8 with 2.7V it doesnt work
then i guess u need more juice...increase voltage to 2.8 :)
CH5 will not do 2-2-2 99% of the time, no matter how much voltage you give it.

All due respect to Gautam (truly), I had an exception.
My Mushkin Level One PC3500 Did 235FSB at 2-2-2-X with 3.2 Volts. I never checked under the heatspreaders out of fear of fubaring the IC's, but they could have been dud BH-5's that were made Level One's. Either way, I assume that they were CH-5, and they were impressive. I accomplished those clocks on my XP-Mobile chip with my Ultra Infinity.
Gautam is right, however. 99% of the time 2-3-3-x is as good as they'll get. I had Buffalo CH-5 that wouldn't do anything faster than 2-3-3-7 regardless of voltage/tweaking. You might be able to get your sticks to do 2-2-2-x at 200mhz, but I wouldn't ask for much more than that. Good luck.
Cheers,
Odie :)

Have some CH5 in the form of OCZ EL 3500 in this infinty running 2.5,2,3,11 @ 233 fsb on 3.0v fully stable. Memtests fine to ~ 240 fsb as well, but fails prime after 20 mins :(

Same experience as Odie, my level1s hit 225ish 2-2-2 3.2v, maybe a fluke of the draw, don't know.

That's exactly where I ended up with my CH5.

Edit:vdimm
Obviously not as good as BH-5, but not bad either. Mine are runing @219fsb with 2.6vdimm.

I had mine in my NF7-S 2.0 running at 230FSB CPC off 2-2-2-11 3.0v 1GB (2x512mb) Buffalo PC3200 CH-5. I'll try higher once I get my Infinity, cause I killed the NF7-S  .

My IC7-Max3 with Corsair 2x256mb LLPT did 210 2-5-2-2 and 233 2-6-3-2 which were'nt bad -- they were rated 200 2.5-6-3-2 for 2.8v on the dodgey IC7 vdimm.
In the words of lipton ice tea -- dont knock it till you've tried it!

Single mode or dual mode? CPC on or Off?

If you turn off the CPC mine did 230fsb 2-2-2-11 with 2.8vdimm on my old nf-7 setup.
mine run 11-2-2-2@2.75 I think i just got really lucky though. i believe cpc is on, becuase i don't see that option in my bios . see sig.

yes-cpc off,no problems running 220@11-2-2-2@2,7 vdimm
cpc on,i got errors on stock fsb(200 mhz)@11-2-2-2...^^

My mushkin PC3500 with CH-5 will OC to 222MHz 2-3-2-11 @2.7v on my AN35NU.
And the same stick will reach an OC of 220MHz 2-3-2-11 @2.7V on my NF7.
2.8Vdimm and above(2.9V/NF7) is unstable and 2-2-2-11 looses stability around 173MHz or so (can't remember). Windbond's rated voltage for the CH-5 is 2.7V but mushkin rates mine at 2.75V. I've read a voltage regulator kicks-in above 2.77V but I think it engages right after 2.7V because the NF7 reads 2.75V at the MOSFET while the AN35NU reads 2.72V and can OC 2MHz higher than the NF7. IMHO, CH-5 is a good OCing memory when your mobo doesn't offer a Vdimm higher than 2.7V.

yup fairly good stuff if you are voltage limited, as the extra voltage doesn't really seem to help much.

Re: Buffalo w/Ch-5 ...
According to memoryman from Buffalo ... their Ch-5 chips are internally
regulated at 2.75v max. This can be overcome at 3.1v and higher. At those
higher voltages the Ch-5 are almost as fast as the Bh-5, though at slightly looser timings.
At least that's what I've read.
My OCZ booster is supposed to come tomorrow.
Can hardly wait as I have several modules with both Bh-5 and
Ch-5 here to try out. (TwinMOS, Buffalo)
