onboard 5.1 vs sblive 5.1

i have the onboard k8v se deluxe which is soundmax 5.1 and a sblive 5.1 my speakers are altec lansing 880 4.1 but they say they do 5.1. i have a spdif cable and a fiber otic toslink with a/v dubbing cable on it, gold leads, for some reason spdif doesnt seem to want to work, before i had 2 speakers setups on my sblive, a 2.1 in rear channel and a 5.1 set to 2.1 in front channel, never got the 5.1 to work right,,, any ideas on these things?

cant pics, not much to show, ok, 2.1 in rear channel out, 4.1 in front channel out for sblive 5.1 before, now using onboard 5.1 which has either 1 out channel or the spdif port, using a dual optic link/a/v cable i used the av cable to plug into the spdif but it seems to only simulate 5.1 and doesnt really use the speakers, is thier anyway to plug it in like i had before without using the sblive card? to have a front and rear plug in?
