My grandfather used to work in a machine shop and had left an old blower w/ my father years ago. It popped into my head after seeing some of the other posts regarding these types of fans. My grandfather said the one he had was used to cool a lathing tool of sorts.

So...I picked it up, dusted it off and here I am. I've cleaned it up, checked to see if everything is working properly..oh man is it! This thing is unbelievable...gotta be 100's of CFM's. So...gonna start hacking the case tomorrow..pics below. I think I'm gonna build a shelf above the Pwr supply. Gonna need a couple of 120mm fans to keep the thing cool...it gets HOT! I'll keep yall posted with more pictures as things develop.

I'm hoping to find a small diameter hose that I can attach to the end and cut a hole in the side..run this case next to an actual PC with a hose delivering some serious CFM's to a copper heatsink.

Just need to make it quieter now!!!

side shot..it will probably sit above the power supply..

How loud?

I guess the only way I could describie it is kind of like a delta fan with really big lungs! The noise of the motor itself is not bad at all but the movement of air through the impeller/blades creates a noisy "woosh"

I'm hoping if I enclose the motor and funnel and use some sound dampening padding or something that things will be a little more bearable.

Did some more work today..decided to move the PSU up above and mount the motor to the base. Tested again..still loud, but the base is firm and free of vibration.

moved psu..gonna use the old opening as an intake for the monster.

doesnt that create some sort of magnetic feilds that can mess up the hd or something?

That's a good point. I haven't done extensive research but I have read some information on the issue. I'm going to run this case with just the compressor to another case with all the goodies (look at simpleton diagram below :)).

I'm going to use a length of radiator hose or likewise to go through a hole in the compressor case..and into another hole in the case w/ the HeatSink, HDD, CPU, etc.

Do you know of something I can line the case w/ to reduce magnetic interference other than the metal of the case itself (This is an old case (the entire cover is metal)?

Just about done now. Just gotta figure out what to as a hose or connection between the fan and heatsink...Any Ideas??

Testing the old AT power supply..couldn't figure out the wire config to get it to run w/o the mobo so I left it in!!! :)

Expandable, hardening foam...messy but insulates sound very well!! Takes about 4hrs. to dry.

This is just a prototype..so I'm using all high-tech materials..like cardboard :)..however, it works well to cut off the heat from the motor from getting into the fresh-air intake.

Finished..except for the "air delivery mechanism"

I can get a peice of plain letter/a4 paper to float about 1.2m up over my blowhole [big tube to funel the air straight and just try to balance stuff] :) bless these rebadged Sunon fans (just found out the other day)

can get a near empty coke can to stick up againts my intake fans too :)

Sounds like a nice setup. I think If I held an empty coke can at the opening and then hit the fan it would launch a foot or two arcross the floor. This thing is like a hand dryer in a public restroom (or lue for some of you :)). Except it's more directed.

I tried cutting up a vacume hose but it was a smaller diameter and there wasn't enough pressure to keep the cfm rate up. I'm using a long piece of cardboard now but I'm still in search of the right piece of large diameter hose.

Hang the fans inside the case with rubber instead of mounting them. That cuts down on vibration noise.

Also, build enclosures aorund the fans and channel the noise through baffels.

IF you are interested, I can provide links.

that is a very nice piece of work but can I just ask if the whole comp actually works with all that stuff in and is it actually stable?
It looks like it has an excellent cooling potential but does it actually work?????????????

Umm..yes! That motor is one big honkin magnet!

Here's how to test if it will effect your data. Write some files to a floppy. Turn on fan, place floppy on housing. Turn off fan, try to read floppy, if it wont read, it'll tank your HDD.

You could use some dryer duct tubing to get the air from the monster to the actual computer. The metal variety is smoother on the inside, though I don't know how that will affect magnetic interference.

This is just the Fan unit. I left in the old Pentium (no pro, no 2 or 3 or 4, just pentium) Mobo in the case because I couldn't figure out how to wire it to make it run w/o the mobo connection. The unit with the CPU, HDD, etc, sits next to this case.

I ended up buidling a cardboard duct and I tried it out. Kept my Athlon at 38c load but I need to do some more work first.

Do you have an old AT power supply that you could use? You wouldn't need the mobo in there with that.

I know another fix, too. Let me see if I can find the link.

ok. I found it. Look at the picture. This should allow you to turn on an ATX power supply without the motherboard.

I tried that trick but it didn't work. The PSU in the case actually has a cord with a power button attached (you can see it in some of the pictures). Many older PSU's had that type of setup.

It was really just a fun project. The psu was a low watt unit and the fan was way too loud, even with the insulation, to be useful.

the PSU in his picture..is not an ATX..its an AT...and If Im not mistaken ( I may be) I though you could "power up" an AT PSU with out it being attached to anything..(except being plugged into the wall)

You just need to put a 1ohm load on the 5 volt molex connector. Got a backup light from a car?

I use dual AT's for a pelt power supply that I don't use yet (waterblocks on the way!) They need a load on the 5 volt for the psu board to fire up to full voltage...just as they would get from a motherboard. I use 2ohm 25 watt resistors. Then you can get that poor abused motherboard out of that case before it dies, and shuts down the psu anyway.

dude... talk about serious positive case pressure...
