well.... i got $400. i want to upgrade. i got a 750 duron cheep mobo (no o/c) and 256 mb ram. i want to get a new cpu ram and a new mobo. i am think of an amd chipset a 1.4 ghz and 512 ram. first i was wondering if you think i could get it for $400... and then (even if i cant) what kind of a mobo would be good? and is cas 2 alot faster then 2.5? and with 512 ram would ecc or registerd ram help performance (speed)? thanks for any help -eric

The EPOX EP-8K7A+ is supposed to be able to hit over 166 FSB :D you can also use the extra cash to get another 256 meg of memory to make it 512 like you wanted :p

well i can get 256 ddr 2100 for 49 at a local store but i think it is 2.5 cas and i want to know if 2 is worth buying... and or even ecc or registerd, since ram is so ceep!

Alot of people here are using crucial 2100 cas 2.5.
You can run it at cas 2 and it will overclock very well I have had mine to 160 but have not tried higher.
Ecc or registered is slower than the regular and is only needed for something like a mission critical server.

Check the Cyber Deals section they sometimes have links to get special prices from crucial but I think its about 37.00 for 256mb shipped.

Here is a link to the memory deal if you are interested.

No idea about the stepping being worth the extra $10.

Yes you did say that and you can try it but I think you will find the alpha is no match for a amd 1.4 cpu.

I dont think your cpu will fry by any means, you will just have to see how it does as I have not seen anyone using that heatsink.

ok... well right now i got $289 at newegg.com for cpu, mobo, lan, artic silver, HS/fan. i got $72 at crusial for 512 ram, and about $65 for a case at my local comp store. and that is $435.... i was going to get the case at newegg.com for $50 but it would add about $30 shipping...

can the Palomino MP cpu work on a normal mobo? or does it have to be a MP mobo?

It works in some single cpu boards, it will work in the 8k7a.
You keep adding parts from your original post lan and a case :)
