View Full Version : Pin Fell Off CPU
Well this is a first for me. My KT7A box was giving me a lot of trouble, randomly locking up and rebooting. I found the northbridge fan had failed and replaced it - satisfied that was the source of the trouble. A week later it was still giving trouble, so I finally decided to tear it down and build a new system. I was going to toss the cpu aside for a future system, and when I was wiping it clean and generally looking it over, I noticed a pin had broken off. Went back and looked at the socket and there was the pin sitting there. The cpu was never stressed in any way. It looks like it just separated at the base. I've never heard of this before, and I sure hope it's not a widespread defect.
you know i had those same problems with my duron. just randomly rebooting and locking up. but only if i ran seti. dunno if it's the same thing but i'm scared to tear my machine apart in fear of finding that out. that sucks
Wow, I've never heard of that either. Bummer man.

Well thats the first I've ever heard of this that wasn't condensation induced... sorry to hear of your bad luck, but if it makes you feel better I lost 3 cpu's last month :D
Well I was using a peltier on this chip, but I found no evidence of condensation. I tore the machine down just a few minutes after shutting it down. No sign of corrosion or any trace of water. Everything was extremely well insulated. I've seen condensation damage on other chips, and there's usually discoloration around the pins and socket - but none on this chip. The pin itself looks good, and there's a silver dot on the bottom of the chip where it used to attach. I hope this never happens again.
