View Full Version : Still Need Help With Overclocking Issues.
lo people,
i still need some help overclocking my system. i want to overclock my P4 3.0GHz to a 3.2-3.4Ghz.
i have the following setup:
P4 3.0GHz
512MB DDR400 x2
Gigabyte GA-8IPE1000 Pro
Gainward 5900Ultra
120GB Maxtor SATA HD
i set the fsb in the bios to 214 which i was told would overclock the cpu to a 3.2GHz. however i think i must of got the voltage wrong because the machine did not boot. ive reset the bios and everythings running stock again. pls can someone help?
cheers!
I've never had problems getting Gigabyte boards to overclock 15% and more, usually on stock voltage.
Kick up the voltage 5% in the BIOS and re-try.
You can always use the Gigabyte overclocking utility in Windows just to try things out.
Since you have DDR400, it's going to be running at the same speed as your FSB... so as you overclock your FSB, you're overclocking your ram as well. At some point, stability will be affected from the ram speed getting to high on stock voltage and you'll have to do one of these three things.
1) Raise your memory voltage (vdimm). If it's at 2.5V, raise it 2.6 or 2.7V and see if it helps.
2) If your board supports it, you can run your FSB:RAM at different speeds ( called running a ratio). For example, with a 4:5 ( some boards it's 5:4) ratio..... if your FSB is 250mhz, your ram will be running at 200 mhz ( 250 * 4/5).
3) Loosen your ram timings... for example, if your running 2-2-2-5 timings.... loosen them to 2.5-3-3-6 or something like that. If your not comfortable changing memory timings, just leave it on Auto or Set by SPD... SPD does a good job of choosing timings most of the time.
Hope this helps :)

ok, cheers guyz i will give them a try when i get home.
oh would the stock P4 fan and heatsink be ok running at those speeds? if not can u suggest a gd cooler?
It all depends on what your temps are right now. Download Motherboard Monitor 5 (http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=204) and see if your motherboard is on the list of compatible motherboards. If so, post what your cpu's idle and load temps are ( to get load, play a demanding game and then hit the Windows key to minimize the game to see your temps), what your case temp is... preferably in °C.
If your load temps are over 55°C then it would be in your best interest to buy a new HS and fan. Thermalright makes some of the best HS's out there for P4 cooling.... their SP-94 or XP-120 is the top model with the slk-948 (what I own) at about second place. If you're curious what temps they give you... look at my sig. Granted, that's with good airflow through my case, but you should be able to drop your load temps to around 48°C at the very least.
