OK so me and my fiancee were fealing a little frisky and we were surfing some of the internets backwoods anyway this is the second time its happened but what were getting is a pop up window that keeps popping up for a dating service [has caused allot of friction] I have deleted cookies cleared history deleted all offline material but still this window will pop up even if i'm just here at this website and no where else, another time I could not get rid of a address bar and i believe it was hidded in my index.bat file [i think] but what i'm interested in is how do i keep these pop up windows from getting in I know i can disable active scripting to stop it but the info is still in the PC and as far as the address bar active scripting will not work [oh and even if i clean out history the address bar will still have a saying like your computer is spying on you] I know there just trying to scare you into buying there windows washer or whatever but i'd like your guys advise instead.

Look in add/remove programs for anything that looks like either a dating service or dialer program

Try this program I uploaded a while back. It should help pinpoint what's doing it as it shows everything that starts up with your PC (even those hidden ones).

Something is starting up and remaining hidden and intermittently opening that little pop up. Hope you can find it with this.

Get a copy of Ad Aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/index.html) from lavasoft, which is a great tool to keep your system free of spyware and other unwanted nastys found on the net

Great tip on the " ad aware " software . The last few weeks I have been picking up all kinds of ad junk from the web. I have been tracking the exe files down manually. The Ad Aware program is fast, effective and a great time saver.

Thanks Billy

Bump for Ad-Aware! I bought it a couple months back and it's one of the best investments I've made. It's only like $15, and for what it does it's an excellent value.

You could also d/l PUK (http://software.xfx.net/utilities/popupkiller/download.htm) (pop up killer) it's free.

or have a look on the web, as there are a few other pop-up killer progz.

Thanks guys but ad aware does not find anything search comes up with 0. I just gut home from my weekend trip so i'll try the software John gave me and see how that turn's out. On the subject of the address bar problem it went away after a while but i read up at there website and they said that these bad sites are hiding info [as well as normal sites] in your index file, anybody have any knowledge about this?

OK i tried Jons file but once installed i cant find it, any help would be appriciated.

OK i figured out where Jons files was duh in the control panal but that just applies to start up items and that does not help much.

As far as looking in the index.bat file that was the first thing i did but most of whats in there is in code so i was not having any luck there either, I will try to check tweakfiles for a windows washing program and see if that helps but i'm still open for suggestion.

Here is a tool I use alot, it will show you things that are installed in the registry but I use for cleaning up the registry.

What you are looking for are "Index.Dat" files. You will have to go into DOS to remove these files and not the DOS shell. Reboot into DOS.

Type this in: cd\windows\tempor~1\content.ie5

Delete the index.dat file there.

Type: cd\windows\cookies

Delete the index.dat file there

These are only two of the places that MS hides information on the sites that you have visited and by remove these it should get rid of some of that problem.

I posted a link to a site that has detailed instructions on getting rid of everything that IE and Outlook record in another thread but it does not seem to be working right now. Here it is anyhow, maybe it will start working again:

http://www.f**kmicrosoft.com/content/ms-hidden-files.shtml#1

You will have to replace the * with the correct letters. Again I hope this does not offend anyone.

In ME I believe that you have to edit the system.ini to get dos shell at the F8 boot prompt.

Check out reg edit I think that they might have what your looking for.
