Hey all, I just got a new 1.4ghz Tbird, with an asus a7a266 mobo, and a big global win fan... so I put it all together, boot up, and its horribly unstable, then I look at temp and it says 65 degrees Celcius! so quickly I shut it down, underclock it by setting FSB to 100 mhz, and it only barely makes it cooler, so thinking I didnt seat the fan right, I took it off, cleaned the old thermal grease off, and put new thermal gel I just bought on it, and put the fan back on, making extra sure the core was touching nicely... but low and behold its STILL too hot... I even got huge fans running on it from outside the case...
So its not only underclocked to 1050 (from its 1.4), but it has a large outside source fan blowing directly on it, and its temp is still 56 degrees celcius IDLE, which I know is too hot... is there something wrong with this CPU? I know the fan is running just fine, I can see it...
Please help, this is my first AMD in a long long while after telling myself never to buy AMD again (I got 3 bad K6's in a row before giving up and buying intel), and all my good buddies have no troubles at all... I even see most of your guys temps running at ~45... *sigh* life isnt fair...

What globalwin fan are u using??
have u checked ur temp in bios or just the asusprobe program?
The asusprobe program is known to show 10c to much, too check if this is the case reboot and go quicly into bios and if temps are more than 3c lower there the asusprobe is the problem and actually the temp is 55c instead.
But it cant explain the stability issues ur having.
if its 55c idle its still a bit hot. Im using a globalwin fop38 with case open + having a housefan blowing into my case i get these temps: 40-45c idle and 45-47c loaded, never over 50s
Thats when running 1.4@1544 (1.75v)
Ok, first things first, what are you using to monitor your temps? Are you using Asus PCProbe? If you are, stop using it and use something like Motherboard Monitor 5. Thats about the best there is. Second, is your hsf seated properly? Did you scrape the thermal pad off? Did you lap it? Are you using a premium thermal grease like AS II? All of these things could affect your temperature. Third, what kind of case cooling do you have? Do you have good case airflow (Are all of the wires and cables out of the way)? Fourth, did you try lowering your vcore? Lowering your vcore can substantially lower your core temperature. Fifth, which model of Global WIN heatsink do you have? Its probably not substantial enough for your 1400 Mhz beast. Answer us these, and we might be able to help you out here. Don't worry, all is not lost! :)

Ok, yes I am using PCProbe, but thats not where I am getting main temp readings, I am booting into the bios and reading the temps from there, and the globalwin is this: http://www.globalwin.com.tw/new-product/Wbk38.html .. Also, oni, what do you mean by 'lapping' the hsf? Yes, I made sure the hsf was seated properly...

What I mean by lapping, is to take your heatsink off, and sand the base smooth and flat, to remove all of the machining marks. You might also want to do a final sand w/ some Arctic Silver II to get it just right. To lap it, first sand it with some 400 wet/dry, then some 600 wet/dry, and if you're feeling particularily full of energy, some 1200 wet/dry. You also have to make sure that the base is flat. Wrap your sandpaper around a piece of glass, and sand in a circular motion.

Thats odd. i dont even get more than max 55c with the fop38 if i close the chase, turn of the housefan.
So something is for sure wrong since wbk38 is better than my fop38.
Did u use thermal paste?? and make sure once more that the hsw is seated correctly

I am pretty sure I seated it right... ill try again I guess...

Ok Oni, I gotcha on lapping it, if all else fails I will try that hehe... thats a bit of work, and I dont think I have any of that sandpaper spare around here...

im too tired to read all the responses so im just going to say what misht be the problem ... maybe somebody already said it ... but did you put some arctic silver or some other thermal stuff on it?

What voltage are you running at ?

Voltage is at 1.75, the default...

ok, thermal paste is probably not your problem, and so is the actual setup you have, by what I hear, your setup has the techincal potential of easliy staying below 50C. (Assuming your room tems arn't higher than 30C)
What I'd say to make sure is that you have a good enough PSU for your fans to work at full power and even more, make sure the fan works!
Good Luck

PSU maybe?
I am not sure what my power supply is, I have forgotten... its about a year old... enlight brand... I think its 300-350...
But then again I have a TNT2U, 3 IDE hard drives, 2 scsi CDroms in here... so its possible...

that is most likely to be your problem.
Try running your case wide open (without finger-playing any of the fans of course) and look if all the fans are working. If they all are, disconnect all your "extras" so you are left only with your floppy, ,HD, CD, mobo, and the CPU fan, don't need the case fans when case is open. Just get into doze and check your temps, if they decrease in more than 1-2 degrees than it is probably your PSU that's giving you a trouble.
Good luck again.
edit: the fast AMD's are power hungry, they need at least 350w and if with all you have in your case 450 may be the lowest you may settle for!!

Nuts... gotta dish out another $100-$150 for a good PSU... figures :/
Well that will be a last resort for now...

test it out first, as I said before, this seems to be the most probable cause for your trouble but I wouldn't be 115% sure untill I have seen it with my own eyes so test it at minimal power usage and see first.
If you need any suggestions on a good PSU, you can get an Enermax that will hold for a good chunk of time and isn't as expensive, you can get off cheap as 70 bucks for 450-500w.

Sorry guys... the Tbird is going back to the retailer... I dont have time for this... I tried a few more things, and it wouldnt let me lower the core voltage below 1.75... im just going to save my money I guess...
Really makes me mad too, the Tbird wasnt even being overclocked, I am on a dual 366a celeron right now, that I personally overclocked to 550, and its temp at max process is a mere 38C... figures that the AMD would give me all the troubles... happend before, why not happen now? I should have wondered when the retailer salesman told me that AMD doesnt give warranty on their processors and they (retailer) had to supply warranty for their customers... too many bad chips I would surmise, AMD would go under just replacing them...
Well, I thank all that helped me for your time, too bad it couldnt have worked out the way I hoped...

I am having similar problems, but I'm not going to give up, and you shouldn't either. I'm running on a duron 950, and whenever I install the 1.4 it will overheat. This is my 3rd bird, and first with this problem. If you guys have any other suggestions other than what has been mentioned I'd apreciate it.

if it's not your power supply it might just be that you don't have enough cooling in your case for a tbird, I would get a palomino. Those will be easier to play with.

Hold on!!! That mobo runs "HOT cpu temps" I own one and I run at 50c alot............................best fix is to flash bios to yhe 1006 version ( the latest bios) This does help

wizardload, but how come it acts exactly as if its overheating? lock ups etc...

Well I'm running 4 90m intake fans and 3 4 exaust fans from 60mm to 80mm and I have a globewin heatsink/cooler and STILL can run high temps in a "warm" room. I have o/c this 1.2 266 fsb athlon at 1.33 mhz with 51c temps loaded
I would check fans etc out. I changed from pentium to 3 months ago and am not sorry or going back soon.( building a 1.4 on a abit kg7 now)
It just takes a lil time and I'm sure you'll get it :)

I also have a7a266 with 1.333 t-bird. I was using the bios that came with my mb. It was version 1002b. After playing Quake for awhile my temp never go beyond 53c. I upgrade the bios to the lastest 1006. 5 minutes after the pc boot, I rebooted and went into the bios. temp was at 60c. It around 58c with the case open. Now after playing Quake it went as high as 65c. But never have any problem with the system yet. Thinking about getting a new heatsink. Any suggestion of which kind? Ones that is not to loud. I'm currently using Thermal Take Volcano II.
