Motherboard manufacturer AsusTek Computer has introduced a utility, which promises to boost overall system performance. The company said that the CPU Lock Free will push the CPU to its limit.

The utility works by allowing users adjust CPU multiplier to 14x. The reduced multiplier value provides more flexibility for increasing external front side bus (FSB) frequency and raise memory bus bandwidth.

Users tweak their systems either by increasing FSB frequency or CPU multiplier, which is usually locked for the Pentium 4 CPU when purchased of the shelf, greatly limiting your overclocking options.

By adjusting CPU multiplier from 18x to 14x, the system operates with FSB frequency up to 258 MHz and memory bandwidth of up to 10.98 GBps while CPU operation speed remained at 3.6 GHz.

The motherboards supporting CPU Lock Free are the P5 AD2 Premium and Deluxe, P5GD2 Premium and Deluxe, P5GD2 Pro, P5GD1 Pro, P5GDC Deluxe, P5GDC-V Deluxe, P5P800, P4C800-E Deluxe, P4P800-E Deluxe, P4P800 SE, P4P800-X and P4GD1.

The CPUs compatible with CPU Lock Free are Prescott LGA775, 800 MHz FSB, 3.2 GHz, 4.0 GHz+ and Prescott Socket 478 CPU, 800MHz FSB, 3.2GHz, 3.4GHz+.

" The CPUs compatible with CPU Lock Free are Prescott LGA775, 800 MHz FSB, 3.2 GHz, 4.0 GHz+ and Prescott Socket 478 CPU, 800MHz FSB,"

Always gotta be some sort of way for us to spend more money on a cpu that's compatible which means for us that have 3.0E prescotts ( like myself) are screwed  .

Ya I just read it and came here to see what if any discussion was on it. I was looking for a new P4 and looking at the 3.0 my self. Hope this makes the front page tomorrow. I wounder what the difference is between 3.0 and 3.2 to allow this?

Edit: Here's some more;

I thought it was just the 3.4 and 3.6 that you could do this to not the 3.2? if so then then that cool Abit is also coming out with some thing like that for there boards.

Well either way it looks like only the LGA775 and the 3.2 and up Prescotts are supported. Anything below those won't have a snowball's chance in hell unless someone comes up with a hack :(

Heh being able to unlock the chips is very interesting news.

Just have to wait and see what else develops.

Dont you think if they can unlock these CPUs, that they would eventually be able to unlock all P4 CPU's?

No. Check out the "Performance Requirement Bit Enables X14 Multiplier" section on this page of the Tom's Hardware article posted earlier for the explanation of how the "unlocking" works. Basically Intel has built a flag into certain CPUs that causes a mobo to set the multipler to 14x instead of its correct value if the CPU is plugged into a board that doesn't support it. Asus has simply found a way to trick the CPU into thinking it is plugged into a board that doesn't support it.

Guys,

Asus has released a bios for the P4C800E-Deluxe only so far for the 478 socket, bios 1018, that has this feature. However it ONLY works on the C0 stepping chips. I have a 3.2 and it works on mine but I am not sure if it would work on a 3.0 C0 stepping chip. Someone give it a try and let us know.

The option is CPU lock free and if you see it you have it if you don't see it it doesn't work on your chip. The reason I know this is because I have a 3.2 D0 chip also and it doesn't work with the D0 stepping chips. At least on the 478 socket.

Hope this helps.

Does anyone have an actual link to this alleged utility? In typical fashion, ASUS's Web site is an unnavigatable maze with no mention of this utility whatsoever.

It's not a utility per say, it is a setting in the actual bios.

EDIT: They don't have a bios that supports it yet for your mobo.

This is the kind of information we need, stepping of "C0" and not "D0" on the 3.2MHz socket478's. Anyone else try it yet? What FSB were you able to get your motherboard to run at stable?

I am at 280FSB stable right now. It's the setup in my sig. Temps are holding me back now.

hmmm i have the P4C800-E deluxe mobo ,using the p4 3.4 EE on it.
I just downloaded the latest bios p4ced18, no mention of such utility there.

the only 3.2's that work with the p4c888 are the sl7b8's.

As I understand it, it's only possible for new P4 CPU's which has PRB on it. 3,4GHz (550) and 3,6GHz (560) are the only ones (now) from Socket-T.

Ed, I updated my BIOS to the new version and I see a setting in the BIOS to unlock the CPU however it only has values of 'Auto', 'Enabled', or 'Disabled'. Not sure how to interpet this. Can you provide some help? (my CPU is a 3.2E, Rev C0, Stepping 3)

Thanks

I just updated to 1.018 and a 3.4E 478. Disabled means it runs at the default multiplier, 17 for me, and 16 on your 3.2E. Set to Enabled, it sets the multiplier to 14. 14x200=2.8 and you can scale your FSB higher and maybe gain some more OC. Note however, this works on 3.4E and 3.6E only from what I read in the article. Kinda of nice to have but with my BH-5, upping the fsb more with a lower multi gains me nothing. I'll post some screenies later of my 3.4E doing 4.01 Gig
