I have 512 megs of pc133 mhz generic ram. I am running win98 at this moment. My friend said that i am not getting all that i can from my memory. Is this true? He said i should go to 2k or xp and i would notice a gain in preformance. Can someone help me?
I believe Win98 is optimized for 256mb or LESS or RAM, while 2k, XP or ME will take full advantage of your large amount of RAM.

windows 9x is unable to use anymore RAM than 512 MB. If your computer has more than 512MB of RAM windows 9x will crash and is unable to run
As for windows not being able to run with 380 MB or more, i got 448 and can run 9x fine.
yes it is true 9x is opimised for 256MB of RAM
