After installing this registry hack I noticed a very slight 3dmark score decrease , I am wondering how to remove this from my registry? Would a reformat be needed , would that even remove coolbits? Also does anyone know how this really helps , I imagine its like the AMD hack so when the system is idling it basically just turns off and cools down?

Are you sure that you are talking about Coolbits? This is a Registry Hack used to allow video card memory and core overclocking with nVidia drivers. It has nothing to do with the CPU idling process.

This hack will not affect your benchmarking scores. Especially if you just put it in, and then never overclocked.

To determine if you have it ... look in the Display Properties for your video card. If the hack is enabled, there will be a Hardware tab that shows the memory and GPU speed.

It's perfectly normal to have a certain amount of variation in the score when running 3DMark2000, or any benchmarking program of this nature.

No offense, but if you are adding Registry hacks to the system, and you aren't sure of what they are, where they are going, or what they do ... I think you should stay out of the Registry until you know more about it. You could render your system unbootable, and that would be a real pain, huh? Much worse than a slight decrease in 3DMarks.

If you insist on making the change, open up the hack with Notepad (Edit), and take note of what changes were originally made to the Registry. Then, browse through the Registry until you find the key, and modify the value back to the default setting.

Perhaps you were thinking of something else, with a similar name?

Advice: When altering the Registry, at the very least, you should export and save the key that is being changed, so you can put it back the way it was. Or backup the whole Registry, just in case. The Registry is completely unforgiving of user error ... you have to supply the redundancy yourself.

Ok next time I wont make this mistake but I still need some help to remove this registry hack.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NvTweak]
"Coolbits"=dword:00000003

So how do I find the HKEY and attemp to remove this hack? Am I going to mess this pc up or can I still try to remove this hack with only this info? The above came from the coolbits notepad after opening up the hack. What if just reformat my HDD , will this reset my registry?

this teaches you to backup your registry before playing around in it.....it's possible to change back to original without formatting and stuff but i forgot the orginal setting for that key so i cant help you

you should be able to turn it off with nvmax
just install it then go to system and check around in the tabs
it's somewhere there

Okay, the way to remove the hack is this:

Start\Run. Type in regedit.edit. This will open the Registry Editor. Browse to the NvTweak folder, double-click to open it, and remove the Coolbits entry.

Another method would be to download and install NVMax, which has an entry for enabling/disabling Coolbits. That would be the easiest way, and the best ... because you could use the program to optimize the video card drivers ... AND not have to get into the Registry.

However, let me reiterate. The tweak is NOT slowing down your system, or lowering your benchmark scores. People use this hack to speed up systems ... not the other way around. You are making a guess about this, probably because you added the hack to the Registry fairly recently. Your guess is incorrect.

Trust me, dude ... I know what I'm talking about. I do this for a living.

And as I said, unless you are familiar with the Registry, I'd stay out of there. It will tolerate no user errors. It may look something like Windows Explorer, but it's not.

You'd be much better off in raising your score by using a tweaking program, cutting off unnecessary programs running in the background, defragging the hard drive, and removing your desktop wallpaper, at least during the benchmark.

As for reformatting your hard drive to get rid of the hack ... well, in my opinion, that's a little nuts! Yes ... formatting the drive, and reinstalling the OS would get rid of Coolbits. But that would be like cutting off your foot to take off your shoe. This is not a virus ... so your reaction is overkill. Why go to all the trouble of a reinstallation, including all of your programs, for a hack that is relatively innocuous?

Trust me on this. You are FINE! I swear. Relax. If you never enabled the hack by cutting on the overlcocking options in the Display Properties, it isn't even doing anything. If you want to be absolutely certain that you are safe, highlight the key, and export it to a folder on your hard drive before you delete it ... then you can put it back if anything goes wrong (which it won't.)

Having the key value is not a problem. Monkeying around in the Registry, because you assume you made a terrible error ... that's a much bigger potential problem. Don't throw out the baby with the bath water.

If you don't believe me, ask someone else on another Forum.

I hope you understand ... I'm not jumping on you. That's not my intention. I'm just being straight with you.

If you need anything else, or have other questions ... fire away.

Good luck!

Thanks Toejam31 , I got into the registry by just typing regedit and there it was. I went ahead and installed NVmax and disabled coolbits then checked and sure enough it was removed from the registry. Although I enabled it again via NVmax so I could manually delete coolbits from my registry for good.

I was suprised to see the only thing coolbits added to my system or atleast that I could see was the overclocking feature.

You can in the future, just run a Find on it/ then delete it from there, poof its gone :)

im glad this was here,i have been wondering how to get rid of coolbits myself.the overclocking feature is not as good as the quadro software hack and if the two are there together it disables nv max overclocking.thanks guys!

This didn't work in my case it only brought up the download in my temp file not the actual hack. I now it didn't work for me atleast because after some searching for this hack by using Find Folders and MS-dos with no luck :( I posted this message.

Actually, he was talking about using the Find feature located on the Registry Editor toolbar, in order to locate the value, or the NVTweak folder. This is faster and easier than browsing through the keys.

However, I didn't want to cloud the issue by explaining how this worked; the user was already at the point of formatting to remove the key .. which was an extreme reaction, IMHO.

Inexperienced users often make invalid calls about the source of a computer problem, and that goes hand-in-hand with applying some kind of fix.

Your confusion is a perfect example.

There is no way to locate a Registry Key value using the Find Files or Folders feature in Windows.

Oops sorry about that Big Lar.
