Is there any way to remove only your OS and not have to lose everything on your harddrive? The reason I ask is that I installed
DirectX 8.1beta. and now I get beta direct draw expired messages. so I deleted the ddraw.dll and ddhelp.exe in DOS and put 8.0x in there but I still have problems. :(
my harddrive is set at Fat 32 so that may be a problem also.
I just want to clean out DirectX8.1 so I can put 8.0 release in.

Go to TweakFiles.com (http://www.tweakfiles.com) and do a search on DirectX or similar. They have a DirectX uninstaller available for download. Should be just what you need.

Thank you:)
But that works for win 98 only.
I also need one for ME, how do I go about fixing ME?
I really don't want to lose all my harddrive, and have to reload
everything.
I just want 8.1beta OUT.... Microsoft *&$#@!
They put that stuff out there knowing your going to use it.
And make it so you can't uninstall it. My mistake for installing beta drivers.
anyway sorry for the ranting.
Is there a way to uninstall win ME only???

Did you do a clean install or did you install over 98?

here's a link for you to peruse:

Here's something else you could try...

Do a search for the ddraw.dll and ddhelp.exe files (as far as which versions to get, I would look for the newest ones available... although I don't know that it would make that much of a difference anyway, I think Windows just needs to see non BETA versions in their respective folder...in this case, the windows\system directory).

When you find the files, download them to your desktop...then go back to DOS and delete ddraw.dll and ddhelp.exe again, as you did before. When you get gack into Windows, copy the newly downloaded files into the system folder and install DirectX 8.0a again.;)

I've attached ddraw.dll and ddhelp.exe from DirectX 8.0;)

You can uninstall ME alone by deleting the "C:\Windows" directory ( you can do this easily by using deltree.exe at DOS ). however, by uninstalling ME, you'll loose all your program files ( Installed apps ). But some files such as documents, audio and video files located on other folders will still be there.

Can you really do that?
have you ever tried it?
Will that wipe out direct x for good?
Then I can do a reinstall of ME (why did I ever get ME:eek:
and Direct X 8.0a. :D
Thank you,
I'll try it at this point.

yup, you can do really do that... I've been doin' it since windows 95 was still the OS of choice. You dont need to reformat your HDD which saves you the hassle and time... just run scandisk from your bootdisk to make sure your HDD is okay.

btw, if you decide to delete windows, dont forget to copy deltree.exe from c:\windows\command\ . Your boot disk doesn't come with this file....

great post! I was wondering how to get rid of ME and convert teh rest to NTFS! Now I know and if my harddrive wasn't bad *groan* I would have been super slick going from dual boot to single. does the little start up .bat get removed as well? thanks again.

everything related to windows will be gone, but your config.sys and autoexec.bat ( and some other files ) will still be there since they're located on the C:\ root directory... but these files can easily be deleted...

Before you go deleting c:\windows you'll probably wanna back up all that stuff that you have saved on your desktop (which is the folder c:\windows\desktop) so that it'll still be there. If you wanna do a really clean install where it wipes all of your settings and stuff, you can delete the win.com file in your windows folder...that's almost as good as a fresh format and install.

If it is Me you are trying to remove the direct x from simply do a system restore.

If you cant, insert the start up disk select help and it will give you a dos command to get to system restore.
