for the new system im going to build, i was wondering if it was worth getting corsair pc2400 ram for $84 or just kingston pc2100 for $42. my friend has an asus a7m266 and he got his kingston ram up at 165 fsb :)

just wondering...

Well, it's a crap shoot really. PC2400 memory is guaranteed to 150MHz FSB. PC2100 is only guaranteed at a 133MHz FSB. Whether or not PC2100 will overclock that high is up to the individual chip. There is also no guarantee that PC2400 will even make it as high as your friend's is at 165MHz.

PC2700 memory is guaranteed at a 166MHz bus but is expensive and hard to find. You're basically at the mercy of the luck of the draw.

Well I must have got a bad stick of Crucial pc2100 because at CAS 2 I hit a road block at 147fsb , if I want to get to a high fsb then 147 I have to return to the deafult setting of CAS 2.5. I tried upping the voltage which did nothing @148fsb its very unstable it will kick me off the internet I cant run 3dmark 00 actually I got through it once but I tried a good ten times. The one time I got through 3dmark 2k at 148fsb my score was up 84 points over 147fsb , to bad I couldnt keep it there. Like I said at 2.5cas I can go higher although I didnt find the limit I got up to 152 then I just decided to return to 145 with my memory timing at 8882222.

Good luck with your memory its not all going to be like mine.

Have the same luck as you jbslow. My DDRs at 2.7v and only doing 140 CAS2 RELIABLY. Won't even do 145.

I can't complain about about my Crucial 2100.
Just flashed the 8K7A bios to 1823. The new bios allows PCI latency adjustments. Default was 32. Set it to 64 and now I can go even higher....currently at 169FSB!! :D

Oops! That was 1824 bios.
I don't have an AGP card either, but I am using an ATI all-in-wonder PCI version, which I believe may also be a factor, as I have seen others post about their top FSB being limited by their AGP card.

due take note by increasing you latency you are adding delays to your system, and this does slow down system preformance. So it is only worth it if you get enough extra speed(MHz) that it makes up for the lose (as some) by increasing latency
