It was getting colder lately but my temps didn't drop, so I removed my PEP66 to see what was going on.

Some small particles were sticking on my HSF so I looked @ my CPU and guess what...........there where a few cavities in my CPU...OUCH

Then I tried to get those particles of of my HSF with my finger nail.........not.

After I polished my HSF temps dropped ~5C-8C

Anyone had this before?

**EDIT** should I try lapping my CPU?

Really strange KILLorBE,
I've lapped a little my C2 with wet/dry sandpaper 2000 grain, but generally isn't a good idea with Coppermine chips for the very thin Core, so all depends by the kind of chip that you are using ;)
Do you have moved your case for Lan parties or something like that in the last days?

I'm using a coppermine
And I didn't move my rig, its my main rig it always stays where it's at (the living room :D).

I'll try to make a pic later (try cuz my camera isn't that good)

I've lapped mine. Just took it low enough to lose the color and get a nice flat little mirror :)

At the moment my chip havn't the blu layer, is 'shining' :D

Whats The Blue Layer do? Protect the core or somthing?

I suppose, that the lapping decrease, a little, the thickness of the external Core protection for a faster heat transfer to the Hs.

Did all the thermal paste get away from underneith the Alpha or something? Like the die 'melted' onto the HSF? The reason I'm asking is cuz I've noticed with my PEP66 it seems to be best for my temps to re-apply thermal compound and reseat it a few times a year. And almost everytime I checked there wasn't really any silver compound left on the die, most of it is around the edges of the die. And yes, I'm being careful as hell when seating the HSF, as not to move it around on the chip...

I believe it serves two main purposes. To protect the core and to transfer heat from the core to the heatsink base.

It also works as a selant, I'm going to leave mine on as I plan subzero cooling and dont want any mositer leaking into the core and causing bad stuff and what not.. however if this happens to you.. fear not.. put it in the oven for a bit and that will get ride of it.. then use a gernous amount of heat sink grease on the core next time :)

I think it was Hoot who noticed that ASII would crystalize after a period of time. That is more than likely what you were seeing on the heatsink, and given the pressure of most heatsink clips, it wouldn't suprise me if the crystals indented the core.

Yes, but I think it's a good thing cuz there's better contact between the core and HSF, and I re-applied ASII about 2 weeks before I noticed this.

Will a microwave oven do the trick? :p

I'm pretty sure that's not what happened.

My camera wouldn't let me take a close-up :( , But you can see the dents/cavities.

is taht a chip on the corner?

anyway at least it still works.

PS your camera is better than mine.
