I have an AMD Thunderbird 1 gig. I bought an approved fan, The evercool ND8, but it runs at like 50+ all the time, Celcius according to the hardware monitor. Whats up.
I haven't heard much about that heatsink. You could try grabbing a heavier-duty heat sink. Top performing heat sinks are the Swiftech MC462, the Thermaltake SK6, and the Millenium Glaciator. A good deal is the Golden Gate 40 available on SVCompucycle (it's basically an OCZ Gladiator rip). I'm currently running at +0.2 volts with a fairly decent clock-up (212 mhz) and only running at 48C under load with pretty high ambients.
Er, the heat sink I have is the Golden Gate 40. Also, you have a hardware monitor up? Does it show the voltage for the CPU core? Make sure that it's at 1.85ish. That's default. If it's not overclocked, you shouldn't need to run it at a higher voltage. If your monitor doesn't offer voltage readings, try and download MotherBoard Monitor 5.

Its at 1.85 volts, which i think is stock. I am buying a new one tommorow. I was looking at a Volcano 2. What are some other sugesstions that are 30 bucks and less and dont have to get off internet.

I have an ND-8 and love it. It's on a Duron@1007 mhz (harder to cool than an Athlon 1ghz because of the smaller die size). With the ND-8 my Duron idles at 41 degrees and peaks at 48 while running Toast (very intensive Athlon/Duron burn-in program). This is 2 degrees better at idle and 6+ degrees better at peak than my OCZ Monster II cooler. My Duron used to crash at 54 degrees during this test with my old cooler but not with the ND-8!
By the way, I lapped (sanded smooth and flat) my ND-8 before installing.
Arctic silver might help a little. What motherboard are you using? Sometimes the motherboard gives incorrect readings.

I have not heard much of this hs either. From what phsstpok said it looks like lapping would help and kendan pointed out 2 good points too. Also, sometimes an AMD approved fan means it's approved for running the chip at default value and some of these fans should not be put on an oc'd chip.

Thanks to ]-[itman for the vote of support.
AMD has the ND-8 recommended only up to a 1.2ghz Athlon or an XP 1500. Evercool states that it is good for an Athlon 1.3 and an XP 1800. Below are appropriate links plus the review where I learned of the ND-8. Take close note of Evercool's tentative recommended heatsinks for XP's at 1667mhz and 1733mhz and 0.13u XP's (wink, wink).

Is that the OCZ Glaciator? I thought those things were terrible. I know there is another manufacturer with a "Glaciator".
I was considering the OCZ Gladiator (with a "d") or Dominator but I didn't/don't want a 7K RPM fan.
The ND-8 has a nice medium noise level and good cooling with it's 5500 RPM fan.
If you really want to test your peak temperatures get a copy of Toast (burn-in program for Athlon/Duron/XP only). Sorry I misplaced my link but you can find Toast mentioned in the HardOCP.com forums.

It's the OCZ Gladiator and the Millenium Glaciator. :)

My mistake. I was thinking of OCZ's discontinued product, Glacier. Can't find any links for that one but here is a review of the successor, Glacier 2, also discontinued.

OK I think a better heatsink would be better that is a normal temp for an AMD stock hsf...
CAK38
Glaciator 1 or 2
Swiftech MC462x
Good HSFs try one of these...
