Hey Guys,

This is probaly going to sound really DUMB, but I'm gutting out my old dorm frige for parts.. well so far I've pulled the pins holding the compresses down.. .. alright now I need to get it out of there..

Soo I'm looking around and I see joints.. alrighty, might as well cut the joints so I can pull her out..

Well I got a lil bit started then I heard a Hisssss.. then pretty soon I'm leaking something... I'm not TOOO worried as this thing hasnt been used in years and I got all my windows in my room open.. but I'm wondering what this stuff is.. dosnt smell like R12, more like Oil.. but alot of it.. I have a wad of papper towel over it to cach the mist so I dont breath it in..

But wondering if I"m doing something wrong, making an idoit of myself, and what I need/should do next?

Wait till it stops and continue tearing apart the system?

Hope for a quick supply, time is towels :)

Jeez! Got any pics?

Dunno enough about how compressors work - I think there is some oil in there, I guess the only other thing it could be is the coolant itself if it was one of those lines you cut. I don't know what they use as coolant in fridges these days. Not CFC's, I know that :)

What does it look like? I'm imagining a thick oily mess all over your room, I'm hoping I'm way off...

Hmm, just thought - the coolant ought to evaporate when it leaks, shouldn't it? Must be something else then if it's liquid (sounds like a liquid from your post). Good luck cleaning it up.

WARNING ! WARNING ! WARNING !

If you’re going to take apart a fridge, and it still has refrigerant in it, if you just happen to cut a line that has liquid in it. (refrigerant changes from a liquid to a gas and back toi a liquid again) the refrigerant may be under presure and will BLIND you via freezing your cornea should it find its way to your eyes.

Be very careful when doing this!

*Looks at ya with one eye closed*

NOW YA TELL ME!!

Hehe, no worries, I cleaned up the mess and the compressor looks fine.. I would take picks but I have an instant camera and 10 pics is 13 bucks of film, got 2 shots left :(

Any more wise words for me?

Compressor's always have oil in them (usually quite a lot). The "hiss" sound is the coolant leaking out

it basicly means that unless you have someone pressure test and refill the coolant gas, you're fridge is now good for nothing but scrap (or a vaccum pump if you're so inclined).

Damn....I think I should save up and buy a used fridge...there's a great guide to making a fridge cooled mobo, at www.octools.com

The only thing I'm afraid of is the condensation.....we're suppose to spray the mobo with some stuff that protects it...but, spraying a 200+ dollar worth peice of hardware isn't something I'm going to fall asleep with a smile over

Hehe, oh she is worth more than scrap man, I 'm doing this on purpose to build a cooling system.. I honestly dont think I'll need someone to come out here and pressure test it, refill, ect.

I can and will be doing that myself when I'm done build'n :)

Correction, 2 sucked, 4 ruled ;) (or what number was it they went back in time)

Sound like you should make your self a lil insultated box with ducting and direct feed from your ac, with an exaust fan to take out the hot air from the top of the case and the ac blowing in the bottom?

Ah yeah I need a better/smaller radiator for my set up, this thing is 3 feet high and 1 1/2 feet wide or so and maybe 1/4 inch thick.. very cheap stuff.. maybe I can bend it down to a managable size, but I'd much rather use a smaller 2x4x6 raditor or something simular..

I was getting kinda sick a while ago, thought I was gonna toss my cookies for a bit.. frige vapor = nasty stuff.

Live long and prosper :)

hmmm, I see, what are your other options then, have you ever considered putting together a lil insultated box with old frige guts chill'n it?

That would be kewl :)
