I am running XP upgaded from 98, is it gonna make any difference between upgrading from 98 and fresh install of XP? Just wondering...because I always install 98 first and then upgrade to XP when I format my HD..

Since the version of Win98 you own is the "Full" version, there's no need to install 98 first...then upgrade to XP from within the GUI. You can perform a clean install of XP, as long as you have proof of ownership of a prior OS (as you do with Win98). When installing XP to a freshly formatted drive, XP will ask you during Setup to insert the CD containing the "Full" version of a prior OS...only because it recognizes your XP CD as an "Upgrade" version. If you already have a qualifying version of Windows installed, there won't be any further need to "prove" ownership of a prior OS to Setup.

I did this with windows ME a few years ago and while it worked just fine one thing that I don't like about it is that if all you do is upgrade without a format you get stuck with fat32 as the file system on your hdd rather than ntfs. That by itself is reason enough for me to suggest a fresh format, so you can enjoy the benefits of ntfs instead of being stuck with fat32.

you can switch filesystems in windows xp from fat32 to ntfs but not ntfs to fat32. open a cmd prompt and type: convert <driveletter> /fs:ntfs and it'll convert over the next time you reboot.
