What does it really do....and should i disable it?

I'm an ATI guy, but I'm sure it's basically the same thing.

From what I've heard, unless you have an AMD64 or some really massivly powerful processor, fast writes should be off. What it does? I'm not sure on that one and would be interested in learning myself.

I turn fastwrites off because my 6800gt goes wacky with it on

I thought these were mainly for 9600 based cards.

I got a couple hundred points on 3dmark2k1 enabling fastwrites with my TI4200.
