Thanks Shadow. I mostly interested to see if many people use version 6 browsers.

dugans

I also use Netscape 4.7 (checking compatibility) and Voyager the browser in QNX.

V.6 ie and Netscape both seem to have more negatives than positive- cookie handling, configuration.
Tried 'em, don't like 'em.

Opera is the best alternative browser that I've used, minus the lack of Javascript support.

I've heard that opera is basically a skin for Netscape, though. Has anyone heard the same?

For anyone who has tried netscape 6.1, did it fix most of 6's bugs?

I make a lot of web pages so knowing what people use and how well browsers function is important and I appreciate the feedback.

I use IE 5.5 but I personally like konqueror for linux but right now I dont have linux on my pc.

I use both IE 5.0 and 5.5 (5.0 came with 98SE on my compaq, and 5.5 came with Windows ME on my HP)

Cnet gave netscape 6.1 a good review saying that it did, indeed, fix all the bugs of 6.

As of late I've been using Opera 5.1<?> (whatever latest version is) more and more as it's pretty fast for most browsing I do. I don't use it on the forums so much as it seems to really drag with all the icons for some reason.

All other browsing I use IE 6.1 and do have the latest build of Mozilla installed.

Will end up primarily IE again the long run I'm sure.

There are two versions of Opera available for download, one has Javascript support and the other does not.. so it depends what you download.

The Netscape browser is substantially based on the open source browser Mozilla and Opera apparently uses some of this code which is where the confusion comes in.

I'm downloading netscape 6.1 right now on my 56k modem so hopefully i'll have it by next week.

I was thinking of trying IE 6 but I dont want it to overwrite 5.5 which works fine right now. I figure If nutscrape 6 doesnt work I'll just uninstall it. I'm not sure if its possible to go back to 5.5 from IE 6.

I think i'll avoid ie 6 until i have to upgrade.

I use IE5 because the other browers won't let you post an image from your system onto the forums.
Netscape 4.07 and 4.7 and Opera 5.11 will not allow it.
Anyone else having this problem?
Maybe I'll try Netscape 6.1, 6.0 was crap!

Ill be reinstalling 6 again (just did a Win2k Emergency repair, so gotta get SP2 and other drivers back in)

I really lik ethe lock toolbar function (i only use back, foward, stop, the file/edit/blah menu and teh address bar, and all that goes in one single row) lock it and it says in place and doesnt shift around with window resizing.

one thing i do is to turn off teh image resizing :(

6 seems ore stable then 5.5 but not as stable as 5SP1

Netscape(4/6 on PC, 4 on mac), IE(5 on mac) Opera and iCab used for browser compatibility checking.

Here:
http://myie2.com

It simply adds many great features to IE, such as tabbed browsing, mouse gestures, pop up blocking etc. There are many pluggins (or extensions) if you need something that doesnt come by default. Its skinnable, very customizable, and only takes less than a megabite so there isnt any 'bloat' (aside from whats in IE). And, of course, since it uses IE core, every webpage looks exactly as as in IE.

Download MyIE2 and try it out. It's IE6 the way is should/could have been had not M$ just put in minimal effort. It's easy to install as you don't install it but just unzip into its own program folder and then shorcut to the exe. It's an extremely functional browser shell using the IE browser as the browser engine core. M$ update site recognizes it as IE so you can use it there too.

Have tried them all, finally gave up to IE.

IE is supported by almost every site.
IE makes windoze happy.
IE, most of all does not gobble up your RAM.

Having dual monitors, I put up the task manager one one of the screens to monitor whats going. Something I noticed imediately was that Opera used more and more RAM as I surfed the web. Of course with a gyg of RAM who really gives a hoot, but its the principle of the thing.

I use Mozilla Firebird 0.6.1 (optimized for p4 sse/sse2) and i'm really enjoying it. Been using it for quite some time.

On my 2nd pc, i just recently discovered MyIE2 and i have to admit, this thing is pretty darn fast. I like the tabbed broswing on both of them but MyIE2 seems to work with plugins a little better than Mozilla has.

on occassion i use IE6 (might be 6.1, whatever the lastest is, i always update) and it works decent, but i hate fuggin pop-ups and all the crap that comes along with IE. I avoid it when i can.

I tried Opera and Netscape and just wasn't impressed with them. Opera felt kind of clunky and Netscape was ok, but i just didn't like it. I also used regular Mozilla for a long while, but felt Firebird was much lighter than mozilla and basically the same thing, plus the optimized versions of Firebird are really nice.

An atlernate browser. Mozilla is a browser/email client/ lots of other stuff. Gecko is the HTML rendering engine and is used in many other browsers, like Mozilla Firefox and Gaelon. Check out mozilla.org for information on Mozilla and Mozilla Firefox.

As for IE 6, it is not standards compliant. It doesn't even do transparency in pngs! Not to mention the security problems...

What are you talking about? Pop-up protection is built into firefox, and the google toolbar is only for IE. There is a google searh function thing in firefox, but that is not in any way the google toolbar nor related to popup blacking (and not an annoying resource hog either).

Mozilla!
I use it because it's simple and has a mad pop-up blocker. I've gotten 0 pop ups since I used it. Other blockers didn't block that well, so Mozilla for me!

I use Mozilla Firefox. This browser has so much more to offer than Internet Explorer, so I wouldn't even consider going back.
One really big benefit is the ability to share settings and bookmarks between my XP and my Linux environments.
But the best things with Firefox are definitely tabs, popup blocking and compliance to the standards.

I use Mozilla in Linux and Netscape 7.x in Windows. I originally used netscape, switched to IE for a bit because Netscape 6 was very slow, then switched back with Netscape 7 for popup blocking and tabbed browsing. Mozilla/Netscape are basically identical. I would never use a browser without tabbed browsing and popup blocking now.

Used to use Opera, now I use Firefox. Less of a ram hog.

NEtCaptor 7.0 -- Retains all the capability and compatibility of IE with tabbed browsing and pop-up control. Also CaptorGroups rock!

I use..

Mozilla for forums and the usual browsing.
Mozilla firefox when i want to umm.. surf for anime.
IE6 when I want to uh... cant remember. But i use it sometimes.

I persoanlly think IE is very junky.
Mozilla is great except its slow to load.

I use MYIE2, now it's called Maxthon. Best in the world, fast, looks better than firefox.

I've used both Firefox and Maxthon. I like both but I think Firefox is more secure as it doen't rely on the IE browser engine. I'm hooked on tabbed browsing. Opera is fine but not quite as good. Even SP2 IE still isn't nearly as good even if Microsoft finally gave it native popup control.

BTW the IE google bar and the Firefox version both function the same for all practical purposes. They both get you a google search going and will translate the page OK except maybe for Asian charictors.

I think this poll needs to be deleted because it's very old specially IE has changed under SP2 and probably many have different opinions since this thread started and come on where is MOZILLA?

It should also include Avant Browser, since so many people use it. :)

I have IE6, opera, as well as netscape. Sometimes I want three windows of the same page open at the same time, and you have to use 3 different browsers to do this
