You have probably damaged the MBR (master boot record). Not a problem.

Depends on which OS you are using. Boot from your CDROM in WinXP and select the recovery consol. Then run fixmbr should make the disk partitionable and then formatable. Here is a link from microsoft about the MBR.

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/reskit/en-us/prkd_tro_ldau.asp

If you have windows 98 then run "fdisk /mbr" to fix it. Then repartition and format.

how do i run recovery consol?

Just boot onto your CDROM using winxp and it will ask you if you want to install a new disk or recover an old one. You choose recover and it will boot into the recovery console. Then you just run "Fixmbr" in the DOS screen it sets up. Nothing will appear to happen but it has just fixed the MBR. Then use "DiskPart" to make a new partition and finally run "Format".
