View Full Version : 1 @ 266 or 1.2 @ 200?? choices....
what is better?
a 1.2g athlon with 200FSSB
or...
a 1g athlon with 266FSB???
My cpu is flat out maxed and is not good enough - I am buying a new chip but the question is to which way to go.
I also do not think my power supple from Antec is not enough for a 1.2 @ 266FSB - I use an Antec 300 watt
and if it requires I go to a new PS then I might as well build a second computer.
Get the 1.2, you can drop the mult to 9 and the fsb to 133 and all will be well. As far as the psu goes, the one you have should be ok for it, I has a generic 300W and my proc is OC'd to 1200 (9X133) and as you see in my sig, there is quite a bit of stuff in there, I also have 7 fans and a bunch of usb stuff in there.

I have recently added 3 more fans to my case, i have 4 extra - basic HSF's I willuse the fan itself to my graphic card and as far as setting the FSB to 133 - my BIOS is the absolute latest, but wont let me set my jumper to 133 so I have my multiplier set at 14 but it is locked on the chip so I need to unlock my L1 bridges.
From what I've seen, and my own experience. The 1G is going to give you a better return, The 1.G is less expensive and will overclock to about the same overall number, somewhere in the 1.4 range +/- (given the same steppings).
As far as the default FSB I don't believe that it matters provided that your motherboard supports 133+MHz since you're probably going to go for the highest FSB anyhow. From what I've seen, it appears that the 200MHZ and the 266MHz use the same cores with appropriate bridges cut to provide the default FSB setting.
My $.02
Good Luck in whichever you choose, keep us posted as to your results.
Thanks for all your help - (everyone in this forum kind enough to drop in $.02 I notice a lot of people here are in Europe but I am in America - where do I get the contact paint? is that like a home depot product or do I need to go to a specialty computer store?
Also on the multipler I notice a lot overclock with a low multiplier x7.5 etc - mine ranges from x5.5 to x14 - what is better high or low? of course it won't matter untill I unlock the CPu but still important to know.
Overclocking paint: use a "Rear Window defogger" repair kit, available at most auto parts stores
As far as the multiplier / FSB issue, most of the time you will get the best performance from your system by running the FSB as high as you can get it stable. The FSB gives your whole system a performance boost.
For example at 1.2G you would get better performance from 9*133 than 12*100 and even bettter performance from 8.5*141.
And as said many times, make sure that you have adequate cooling!
I hope this helps.
Good Luck!
I am up to 13 fans right now total in my system
1 more will be added to my north bridge on the MOBO , one more on my geforce2 and 1 fat @$$ 120mm to the top of my case once i cut the holes.

*watching jbell's system slowly hover away*
I have quite a few fans in my case right now (around 7, I think). Why not just go with watercooling? Less noise, more efficient, and much more geek appeal than standard air cooling. I would go with the 1 Ghz with the higher bus myself. Just my $.02
LOL thanks man - it wont hover far I chained it to the floor...
