View Full Version : Running out of big WUs
My production is going to plummet in the next couple of days as big work units are finished and replaced with big Tinkers and small Gromacs. Sig rig #1 and #2 finished 4 p1308_s yesterday and got two p112_ Tinkers, a p724_ Gromac and a p928_ Gromac in their place. This results in a 100ppd per machine reduction in production. I noticed a couple of AMD bigpacket rigs at my office folding p112_Tinkers yesterday. Apparently Tinkers run more efficiently on AMD cpus as they suffer only a 50 ppd reduction. I wonder if the big work units are being released to non -advmethods machines, diluting their availability?
Yeah, I've been chugging along at around 300 ppd....... but I just got two massive Gromacs, I think they're going to take 3 days to finish so my ppd's going down the tubes. Oh well, it'll average out at some point.
It may be worse than I thought. All four bigpacket rigs at my office are running Tinkers or small Gromacs. I have no idea how my borgs are doing. I hope it's not just me that's having this issue.
Stanford reports that the "bigpacket" (p130x) server (171.67.89.154) is down for a few days. No one will get new big work units until it comes back online. Credit for big units turned in will be delayed.
chasR, notice how me 'n u keep doin that little dance around spot 4 ppw producer? =P I should be addin 5 more p4 ht's soon, but I dunno if they'll give me the soild push I need to put u permanently in the rear view =P
idk what is up, but my points have just taken a nose dive lately...

Same here Stan.

I was coasting along at around 1150 ppd, and now I'm at less than 800...

I have noticed. While I may shrink in the mirror for a while, my goal is to make it into the top five in something less than the 3 plus years it would take at the current rate. Obviously, there isn't room for 45, OC3d, ShadowCat, you, me and aznwhiteboi in the three spots below Nik and Wedo. I'm sure there are others close enough in production that if they increase much, it'll take forever to catch them. So I've got to try to get to the 30,000 ppw level to have any assurance of making the top 5. I've been replacing old 400Mhz pentiums at my office with M-XP 2500+ rigs at a rate of about one per month. With 7 more to replace, I figure my production could go up by 8000 ppw over that time. I've got some 3 borgs (1 P3, 1 P4 HT, and one M-xp 2500+ @ 2.4 GHz) comming on line this week, I hope. That depends on my college student son who currently isn't marching to the beat of my drummer.
30k ppw?! u'd be outdoing nik by three fold....... man I just got a 3.4E comin on, my dual xeon rig I've been lazy about powering up, gotta get that, and 5 more orders for work.
damn.....30k....well, if u put that up in ppw, I'll match it ^_~

ive gone from 850 to 0..... :( something is majorly wrong
yea, today is shapping out to be my worst ppd on a weekday in quite some time.... :(

Stats show zero points for the last 24 hours (down from 800ppd). My five good rigs are all running big-packets and -advmethods so I assume their results will not be tallied until the server comes back up. The longshot possibility for points today is a celeron 566 and who knows when it'll finish one. :D

Nah, Niks doing 50K+ ppw. I don't think I'll ever get there. I do have the advantage of owning most of the computers folding for me so I can keep up pretty consistent production.
Having the bigpacket server down is really hammering me. 11 out of 29 rigs were folding p130x_s. They're producing 25 to 50% less than usual. Most of the ones not folding big WUs are barely worth the power it takes to fold.
Server .154 is back on line now.

Glad to hear that server is back up. My points have been faltering a bit due to some odd WU assignments, such as big Tinkers which don't do well on my P4s. I'm glad I'm not alone in falling production; as this will affect everyone, Team 32 production won't suffer compared to other teams. Big Packet WUs have spoiled me a bit, so I'd hate to see them go. Especially since the new Amber core WUs fold like crap, at least on my rigs (lower ppw than typical non-BP Gromacs). Anyone else notice this with the Amber core? Any noticeable difference between P4s and AMDs, like with Tinkers?

AMD's do much better at all tinkers than P4's because of superior FPU performance and so dropping from BP gromacs to big tinkers is not such a hit for us AMD folders.

I'm not sure if that was to answer my question, but I was wondering about the difference on the Amber core. Arkaine, you have more than a few AMDs, so how do they handle the Amber core (if you've folded any, I know they're relatively new)?

I have yet to get an amber core on any boxes I can directly monitor. They all have been getting big gromacs or big tinkers lately.
I'm still doing fine here, got a bunch of 230 point Gromacs, a few 42 point ambers and just finished a 215 Amber yesterday. I like Tinkers on the regular Athlon's as with the lack of SSE they have no advanatage on the gromacs so they score better with the big tinkers.
I'm still keeping about 550-600ppd even through this slow time ;)

I've only gotten 42 point Amber core proteins which fold on my Athlon@2350 at 4:46 per frame. This is about 126 ppd, 882ppw. Super Tinkers do almost twice that on AMD.
The bigpacket server is back on line but the number of WUs in queue for assignment is down to 101, less than 1% of the total of assigned WUs. So, many rigs set to fold big WUs aren't going to get p130x_s on their next assignment. I've got two BP rigs that didn't get big WUs on the last assignment.
both instances on the computer in my sig is folding P1308's :-/
Quote from Bruce @ Stanford:
"The big WUs are being reformulated from information learned from the first projects. There will be more soon. (There's a lot of science that can be learned from big WUs, so there will probably be more projects coming over longer time periods.)"
There are indeed not enough big WUs to go around.

I don't recon that they assumed so many of us would be setup and willing to run this big boys....HA that will show them!
yea but im not liking the tinkers... :-/ drop from 900ppw to 500
