What about Windows 2000? Only logo.sys on my system is in Norton's Systemworks.
~RT~
C:\WINDOWS\logo.sys should be the logo.
logos.sys is the shutdown pic:
"It is now safe to kill this damn infernal machine"

Well apparently for Windows 2000, the logo.sys and logos.sys is not true. So no one knows where Windows 2000 stores it's startup screen?

The Mods will NOT have a fit if the software is freeware, shareware, GPL, or other non-warez program. Feel free to link to the software if you choose to.
You are answering a question with information you have discovered. It is part of why we are here, to help others.
I hope this helps clarify things.

man, it would be really great if someone could help me do this in WinMe... that XRX proggie does'nt do anything, as far as i can see...
now i have no shut down logo...
cuz i replaced "safe to shut down" LOGOS.SYS with a BMP named LOGOS.SYS but it does'nt show up.
and i cant find a LOGO.SYS either.
a hand with manual replacement would be appreciated
I've got a way that doesn't use anything other than the windows paint program. I'm not sure if it will work for anything other than 9X though. Am I allowed to put here a method that is outlined in a book or would that constitute infringement? Lemme know green star people. In the mean time here's my startup screen:
I swear I'm gonna kill this effin machine! It is not giving me my due today! Here is my startup screen: (hopefully)

The way I do it is to make a 512x384 bmp. Before you save it make it 300x400 and name it logo.sys, logos.sys, or logow.sys. Stick it in the proper directory and you should be set to go. Logo.sys goes in the root directory (C:\) and the other two go in the windows directory.
Good luck!
that sounds easy enough...
but would'nt i have to remove/rename the old ones?
how come i can't find any files that are named that?
Eoboard.. handing off a tip wont cause trouble...
please post that, i need more info on this.

Windows doesn't need to have the logo.sys anymore...it's just automatic..unless you wanna change it. The others *should* be in there...at least for the win9x versions.
i found LOGOS.SYS
not either LOGO or LOGOW anywhere
however, i straight deleted LOGOS.SYS and replaced with a BMP renamed LOGOS and the other two files were also created...
but placing them in does'nt take effect,
aside that i have no start-up, or shut-down screens
this is strange
ok, in "My computer" it reads...
A, C, D, and control panel... right...
i created LOGO.SYS, LOGOS.SYS, and LOGOW.SYS
each being 300x400x16 BMP images.
i dropped them into "C"
then, the start screen was removed, but not replaced.
where am i going wrong?
one of those should have come up for start up i think?
also, LOGOS.SYS when placed in C:\Windows\ ... after original was removed... only eliminated the shut down, did not replace it.

What did you make them with? I know when I used Photoshop I had to index them or something like that...don't remember exactly as it was a while ago that I did this, but it didn't work at first for me, either.

Actually, here's my logo.sys. You oughta be able to edit it and that should work. Just remember that it'll look really weird if you don't change it to 512x384 to edit it and then change it back to 300x400. :)

I have a quick question that isn't meant to be a flame or anything like that. How come a windows crack which changes the bootup/shutdown screens is okay (which i'm pretty sure is a violation of EULA), but for instance asking about legaly copying a game CD for archival/backup/scratched/etc purposes is not?
How is changing the startup screen on a copy of Windows XXXX that you own any different from using a "cd crack" on a game that you own? Why is one okay and one looked down on?
Thanks in advance,
Josh

Well, in one instance, you're stealing software...or you could use the information to do so. In the other you're modifying certain settings which you are allowed to do. It's really just the same as installing a program. This is not a crack in any sense of the word. A hack, maybe, but a hack is completely different from a crack. That is why the one is looked down on and the other isn't. The difference between getting this site shut down and having it running. If I thought that disussing how to modify the boot screen would get this site shut down I wouldn't even consider doing it.

agreed hack and crack are two entirely different things. my example given was not stealing software, but of making a backup archival copy for a game or using a modified .exe so CD lookup is not used on a game you already own.
i'm all about abiding by the rules of oc.com too. i just saw this post as good opportunity to raise this question. my personal opinion is if i pay for something i should be free to modify into whatever i see fit.
Josh
heck, if we didn't want to hack we'd be ordering our P4s from www.dell.com (or worse best buy) and not browsing www.overclockers.com.

Quite true. The problem is that having the information for backup purposes can be construed as having information for cracking warez or making illegal copies. We just don't want to overstep our bounds and bring in the law here. It *is* legal to make a backup of your software and whatnot...but you use the same methods to make illegal copies, so we don't talk about them.
If you really want to discuss that kind of stuff try doing a serch on google for it and keep our forum safe. :)
well actually, you are allowed to make a "back up copy" of any disc you purchase. only one copy.
you may not "use" both copies at the same time, or sell a copy, yada yada
to use a modified "exe" is against the general terms of discussion on this site... because, simply put... these come from warez channels. we cant discuss these as you/they/someone may misinterpret this as:
N2 is telling bob-o how to modify his warez files to work
when it can also be construed as
N2 is telling bob-o how to make his back up work
which would anti-piracy groups prefer to see?
the general concept is that the info does in fact apply to legal and illegal uses.
while psychedelic shrooms may be used in spiritual rituals by shamans... they're still illegal right?
i dont agree with it, but here we have to play by it, and for this place..... its worth keeping trouble out by keeping mouths shut.
there are MANY places to find out about game backups, or warez or anything else.
O/C'ers is mainly hardware clocking anyways.... its nice that they let us have such free roaming topics here as it is.
windoze tweaks are not against EULA either...
and all it's doing is changing the image i see on my personal machine... you see, i already own the software.
it's mine to tear apart and destroy as i see fit!
as long as i dont give the pieces to anyone else :)

open a folder and go to tools-then folder options, then find file types, and make it not show hidden files. Then do a search for *.sys and all sys files will apear but on a NT based machine these filesw are not in the OS only for 9x MEmachines
http://www.littlewhitedog.com
i would really like a person running WinME to find the files... and tell me where they're at...
cuz i've shown hidden files, ran searches, looked at all sys files...
and they ain't there!!!
c'mon, what the hell is going on here????????

They're in the same spot for ME...I have that and 98. You're not going to be able to find the logo.sys file unless you put one in there yourself. Try downloading the one that I attached and sticking it in your C:\ directory just to make sure your system will actually do that. I'm sure it will, but that would be a good check. The logos.sys and logow.sys are both in the C:\windows folder...but they don't necessarily exist. They arne't required for normal use and Windows doens't complain if they aren't there...they just aren't displayed.
You might try renaming the file I attached to logow.sys and logos.sys and sticking it there, again, just to be on the safe side.
Hope this helps you out. :)

Does that 512X384 to 300X400 thing work 100% because if it does then there's no point in me posting my method, my method is much more involved.

As far as I can tell it does. :)
Ooops...I think I might know where some problems might be coming in here...
The file is supposed to be 320x400, and mine are all in 256 color.
Sorry about that guys. Shows me what reciting from memory does.

Bahhh its neither a hack nor a crack it just changeing a file. Yes MS dosen't want the file changed but if you left it up to them they wouldn't even let you edit your REG. Its pure BS. They tried to take Gateway I think it was to court because they got rid of the MS start up screen and used their own.
Hacking: A person or persons who break the law by breaking into to systems for knowlage.
Also the orignal term was used for people that hacked their system together from scratch.
Cracking: Breaking codeing to make a program freeware or also cracking password hashing also see Hacking.
Script kiddie: Someone who uses a canned program(IE: SubSeven to break into machines.)
I hope this clears up the terms.
Boy I hpe this dosen't get edited.

Hacking is much different than that. That is just one of the many faces of it. I'm not going to get into an discussion about it though, as it really won't benefit anybody to discuss the intrisacies(sp) of the meaning of the term hack. There are just far too many different definitions from too many different people.

OK I found the logow.sys (windows is shutting down) and the logos.sys (it is now safe ........) , they were in the windows directory. I have not found the startup screen.......no logo.sys.
I did however a logo.wbm in the C:\windows\application data\Microsoft\welcome folder. It would not open in paint . Where is the start-up screen? I am running Win 98 (first release)
