I was just wondering when/if there is going to be a new Opteron chip coming out to replace the 250@2.4ghz. I know the roadmaps says the dual-core's are coming out in q1 or q2 next year and I see that 2.6ghz FX chips are coming out at the end of this year. Since Opteron and FX are very similar, I would expect a new Opteron to follow.
Anyone got an idea when these chips are scheduled/if they are going to come out.
Dual core would be nice but I'm after raw speed and I hear the dual cores wont be as fast as the top of the line single cores. (heat/power issues)

Raw power most likely will increase, but single task speeds will probobly drop, from the "predictions" i'we seen. Its all a bit to sientific for me, but the general idea is as they cram em together, to manage heat output, they will have to drop the speed of the single core, and the "advantage" would then be the same as from a slower dual cpu system in the first place...
But then again, its pretty much all speculations, we dont yet know...
Sadly.
But life is more fun with a supprize every now and then *- )

And there's always some good water cooling or phase change. If Ed's article on the front page a while ago is true, the dual core Opterons are going to be underclocked to contain heat production, so with excellent cooling, they ought to withstand an overclock (assuming such boards EVER come into existence).

If sutch boards dont hit the market fast enough, we can allways go back to the old hardcore style, and start desoldering the clock crystals, for replacing. I remeber a dual Socket 5 mobo, i retrofitted with a socket and had a bunch of crystals for...
