View Full Version : Help with start up timining
OK, i have been hearing from a few co-workers that a good computer can start up in under a minute. my comp starts up and is ready to go at 1min and 10 sec. i have a gig of ram, hardly any used space on an 80 gig hdd. 3.0 p4 with h/t and an abit AI7 modo, i noticed an increase in speed when i went from my ol' intel mobo to the abit so is there anything else i can do/configure to get it to boot faster? the screen it stays at the longest when booting is the windows screen with the little blue thing going by under the XP symbol and the detecting device screen put on by the mobo.... :eh?: when i bought a labtop awhile ago but then got rid of it, it had 512 ram, 3.0 p4 with h/t and a 60gig hdd, and i turned off all the stuff on msconfig and when i would turn it on i couldnt even walk out of the room without it already at my windows screen?? also i did turn off everything except norton systemworks, and the 2 rundll.32's on msconfig.
thanks for the help in advance.

If you have windows xp download Bootvis real good prog shaved 20 secs of my boot time know i boot in 25 secs with the rig in my sig. If you dont have xp im not exactly sure if there are any progs for boot performance ask around.
download here (http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/12/2/12-2-1.shtml)
what does that program do as in how does it work? and will it harm my comp's components?

Well it definitley does not harm ur system i think it basicaly defragments your boot progs and processes.ive used it for a while and its only done good for me
its an official microsoft program but microsoft has stopped supplying it so its available of other sites ask around if you want details about what it does

Bootvis and defragmenting can both be helpful. Also, try this. Create a new .txt file called ntosboot and place it in the root directory - c:\. In it, place the following two lines, replacing *USERNAME* with whatever your Windows username is.
del c:\windows\prefetch\ntosboot-*.* /q
del C:\Documents and Settings\*USERNAME*\Local Settings\Temp-*.* /q
Rename the file to ntosboot.bat. Now, assuming you're running XP Pro, go to start, run, and type in gpedit.msc. Go to Local Computer Policy --> Computer Configuration --> Windows Settings --> Scripts (Startup/Shutdown). Open up Shutdown, click Add, Browse, and select the ntosboot batch file you just created. Now, whenever your computer shuts down, this batchfile will be run.
The first line of the batchfile clears out a section of your prefetch and cuts quite a bit off of booting times. The second clears out your profile's temp files, which makes a bit of a difference. The second line is optional, usually only good for a couple seconds.
mmkay, ill have to download it and try it out when i get home, as tryin out that program, but i have XP home, not pro, my little flashing blue line is from service pack 2, it used to be green but now its blue which i like better because it matches my scheme anyways.

bootvis works on all versions of xp so dont worry
ok, thanks again, do you think if i trade out my ram for a gig of corsair XMS will help speed it up also?

The difference in timings you'll get won't make a significant difference, no. At least, it's not in any way worth the money you'd spend.
