Hey all
Im building a new computer for Engineering and CAD stuff only, and i was wondering HOW much of DDR ram im going to need for CAD and Engineering programs. Like.. Pro/Engineering, 3D CAD, stuff like that. I know they like lots of RAM, but i need some help here. Also, am i going to need a really sweet video card?

Thanks again
Matt

Yes you will want a good video card.
Most cad users go with matrox cards.

Actually you'll want a CAD oriented video card... I worked at PTC this summer and Pro/E thrives on systems that have 512 MB to 1 GB of RAM and a good CAD oriented card. Some of the ones we used in the Arden Hills office:

Elsa Gloria
Quadro 2 Pro 64MB
FireGL

Otherwise, any of the NVidia Quadro 2 cards should suffice. I'd say even a Quadro2 MXR would be better than most any 3D gaming oriented card. Not sure if the software hack works as well as having the real deal..... might be worth a look.

I had the Elsa card in my workstation (Dual P2 400, 512 MB of RAM) and I can guarantee you that that system would run Pro/E better than my Athlon that I use at home....

Our engineers here use Pro/E. We have 2 machines, 1 is an Epox 8K7A with a 1.4 tbird, 512mb PC2400 DDR, Elsa Gloria III Quadro 2 video card - the other is an Abit BX133, PIII 1.0, 768mb PC150, Elsa Gloria II Quadro. Our engineer using the Epox setup loves it. The Elsa cards are quite pricey, though.

Ya if you have the money I would go with the elsa, but chawken is right they are quite pricy.
