want to set up another box...but....

Hey guys,
Been awhile since I've posted but im still folding none the less. Ive got some extra money lying around here looking at me and Im pretty sure it said use me to get you another folding box. Im at school now and only have one port to plug into. Question is, is there anyway to get around this? I have a linksys router from home, but Im thinking the network people might frown on me splitting there connect. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not sure they would even know unless you use a bunch of bandwith or they really look at the logs and check out every IP that is connected to.

if it were me i would do it in a second. unless they are looking for something of the believe me they are probably WAY too busy to notice especially at the ebgining of the year. and after all, yo uare benefiting medical science so it shouldn't be that ard to explain that to the dean or whomever. unless of course you signed one of those blood curdling student technology contracts... i would read it very carefully before you do much of anything

I don't think any of the network guys are really going to care that your splitting a connection. Their biggest concern is going to be maintaining the switch or hub that your Category5 connection plugs into. Plus a lot of schools have Class C subnet addressing allowing them a big pool of IP's so either way, your Router is going to spoof an IP address for both of your boxes and you'll be fine. Also, if this is college...or private school, you pay money to go right? All that money you or your parents spend...go for it!

Like The-Last-Kehoe said it's not like you are running a porno site from your room, you are benefiting medical science so it shouldn't be that hard to explain that to the dean or whomever if you had to.

The only other thing I can think of is to run a cable from someone elses room who isnt using it over to your room and plug it up. Or from a room that isn't occupied.

One thing I learned is...If there is a will there is a way.
Just don't do anything that might harm your standing with your school. Did you ask the people in I/S what their policy was? You might get some extra folders from just talking to them and telling them what we are doing......

If you use your linksys Router It will only show one IP address if the IT guys look at no matter how many machine you have on it. Just do hog the bandwidth and no one will care. IMO

I'm using a Linksys cable/dsl router and it shows the same IP for all machines when connecting to the outside. Also you can set up the router so that you're virtually invisible until you start sending packets.

I couldn't have said it better. I have same router with two 16 port smc switches an 8 port and a 5 port and love it. I have had no problems with the router. Another option is to install about four clients, so that it will only have to update once a day. If you need to be sure it has work while you are gone leave lan off so that 3 clents will run out of work and let it update a while before you leave. Just install as many as you need to do the job. I do this on two rigs that are in a room with only the 8 port switch. :p
