Hello,
Since I built my computer a week and a half ago it has worked great, only just a bit on the hot side. Today I replaced my HSF and placed a Copper Shim on my Athlon 1.4ghz 266fsb CPU. When I turned my computer back on...it didn't work. I heard NO beeps from the motherboard. I was a little worried. When I held the power button for 5 seconds, the power DIDN'T turn off, so I pulled the cord. I wiggle the new HSF some and try the power again. The EXACT same result. I pull out the HSF and look at the Copper Shim............I placed it on incorrectly. So, now that i'm almost crying. I fix the shim, but the HSF back on and try again. This time, I hear the hard drives "turn on" but still NO beeps from the motherboard and no output on the monitor. Does anybody know if it's just a case of the CPU not posting.....or is it *gulp* more than that?

I am thinking a static elecricity discharge. Did you protect yourself and your componets from static? It only takes a little.

Do you have a way to test the voltage going to your Motherboard

come to think of it......I only used the gloves to take the processor out. I took them off and forgot to put them back on.

this may sound silly, do you have the power switch on the back of your powersupply set to the correct voltage in your house/flat/apt.? 115/220

one reason i wont use a window in my PC
Pastic, laytex, plexi....ect all attracts static and also can genarate static
not something i want around my computer
plexieglass water block hold downs i think is the most INSANE thing i have ever seen
but what does a electronic engineer know
heeheee
but face it............these things ALL conduct/attract static and is something you need to know
best way to prevent static is go to a electronic parts stroe and get a anti static wrist band and attach it to your PC case
it will ground you so no static can form on your being
=)
Static is one of the many reasons I love living in a place with a more than sane humidity ;)
Double check all your connections (seating too) and check the CPU for discoloration in the upper left corner of the core (where the L2 cache is located and the first place to fry usually). Also check for funky burnt electronics smell coming from the chip (pretty strong, don't have to snif too hard). Last but not least check CPU corners to see if they're all PERFECT, it's easy to chip them and bugger your cpu.

I didn't even have to try and smell to notice the "funky" smell....it was just there.

I have received RMAs for my CPU, Mobo, and HSF (Volcano II) for a credit to my card. I have already purchased a new CPU and its on the way. I already have a better HSF (SK-6). I am going to order a new motherboard today. Which chipset and/or board would you all recommend. I'm looking to get another one with RAID capabilities. So far the top on my lists are.
1. Abit KG7-Raid
2. Gigabyte GA-7DXR

i have placed the question of which mobo to get in the AMD Motherboard section.
