Whats the fastest 250GB drive out there. More in terms of the bandwith.

I think currently it's still the hitachi 7K250. (Wouldn't mind to be proven wrong though)

Nope the fastest 250GB hard drive is the Maxtor Diamond Max 10 SATA-150
16mb cache.

Well, according to Storagereview (http://www.storagereview.com/) performance database, and taking as a reference the Maxtor MaxlineIII, which is the same drive with better reliability specs, it looks like both are head-to-head, with a slight advantage for the Maxtor in desktop environments, and for the Desktar in server environments.

For a good second place if you don't want to pay the premium and for some reason all the maxtors I had failed all at the same time, so they are iffy with me, The new Seagate 7200.7 series is really good, the bigger ones use a higher density platter and is NCQ capable armed with a good SATA controller it's really fast.

In general though, the 7k250 has the best seek performance amongst 7200rpm drives and good enough buffer managment to prevent the competition from erasing this factor.

But to be honest, any of these 7200rpm drives are both pretty quick, and markedly slower than a raptor at the same time. Even the 8MB WD is peppy enough in practice, through superior buffer management.
