is the shared connection to the net working? Did you say no to a firewall being presetn but you do have one or vice versa?

My roommate just set it to be static with the IP that he got when he originally leased the IP using a windows box. Just make sure that the eth0 that you're using as your 3com card is actually your 3com card. When I was using multiple NICs my 3com was eth1...which got kind of confusing till I realized that.

You could probably test this with ifconfig...

Thelemac,
won't that cause problems when your ISP changes your IP?

One might think so...but apparently my friend hasn't had a problem with it. Seems that they don't do that once it's leased.

That's rather what I thought, too...but it does work for him, so I'm not going to argue.

I was going to start my own thread but seeing as this thread is almost identical to what mine would have been I'm putting my question here. Question: Does Mandrake 8.0 support cable internet?

Yeah, as long as you either:

1) set your e0 to dhcp
2) manually change your IP info when your lease is up

I don't remember the specifics on how to do these 2 things as I haven't installed Mandrake in a while, but they're both things to do during install/setup.

if you have pump or dhcpcd installed, try suing to root
and then entering on the command line either:
/sbin/dhcpcd ethN
/sbin/pump -i ethN

where N is the number of the ethernet device connected to the cable modem. It does not matter what distro it is, this will work. Unless your isp is non RFC compliant vis a vis dhcp.
