Lo all first post :P

Just got a AMD athlon 1.4/266 cpu

Ripped sides of my tower and rammed it in,fitted super mini orb and powered the baby up.....******* made a small attempt at booting but the monitor clicked back off within 20 seconds,i use a 250Watt psu and have a geforce 2 gts, soundblaster, networkcard and 2 cd roms 1 HD and 1 FDD in.The mobo is an ECS K7VTA3 with 256 DDR memory in it.

Is CPU faulty?

Is PSU not enough to power it?(250)

Did i forget to do something?

Am i stupid?

any help please :)

he he, welcome to the forums.
Yes, you're PSU is a little to small... but you should be able to boot the sucker. Allso, the HSF you are running ain't no good. ORBs kinda suck... so you should think about getting a new one. They don't cool well enough to use with a 1,4.
Try to boot you're compy with only CPU (and HSF), RAM and graphics card. Let us know what happens.

good luck!

get a bigger PSU, 250W is not enough! athlons need at least 300W PSU . Click HERE (http://www1.amd.com/athlon/npower/index/1,1712,,00.html) for a list of AMD recommended power supplies for the Athlon 1.4GHz CPU

welcome 2 the forums!!!!!!!!!:)

I'd get around a 400w PSU or bigger if your going to run that 1.4 gig, along with extra CDroms and HD's. Then you know you got a little extra power for everything else.

Can you atleast get into the bios? I had a buddy that ran a 1.1 gig on a 250w PSU with two CDRW's and two HD's. He would just loose a HD or one of the CDRW's at times from lack of power. But the system still ran fairly stable. Thats a big difference from 1.4 gigs though. You may have a wrong setting in the bios or a conflict that's causing the system to power down or lock up, whatever it's doing.

If it runs for 10 minutes and crash/hang, then it's probably heat issues. You said you're using an orb, get rid of it and get a decen hsf. The Thermalright SK6 should keep your CPU fairly cool, provided you have good case ventallation/airflow.

That's still a high temp. What HS did you get?

are you using arctic silver II or the pink goo? the ping goo is pure, unadulterated CRAP

The AS2 should lower your temps considerably...

Also, make sure the hsf is on correctly (smiling, thinking of e_storm...don't feel bad, everyone makes stupid mistakes)

Try running the comp with the side off until you get the problm fixed...that should help.
