and should the heatsink and fan that came with it be ok for my 1.4ghz t-bird.. The sink I got with the cpu I purchased from newegg is freakin huge but the fan isn't that large at all.. I do have a more souped up sink/fan on my oc'd celeron so would I be better off swapping.. or should I see how the one that came with the chip will do..

Arctic Silver II is the best by popular vote. At the very least normal Radio Shack type thermal compound should be used.

The heatsink and fan that came with the chip is OK only if you don't plan to overclock. You will more than likely still get pretty high temps with that running at default speeds.

Depending on the type of heatsink and fan on your Celeron it may work better, it may not. Some heatsinks are good up to a certain point but 1.4 AMD chips put out a whole different story of heat. What works good for Intel won't always work good for AMD.

If you plan on overclocking, an SK6 or Millenium Glaciator are around the best for the money. Few others could be recommended as well...those tend to be popular and I have one of each. They work well.

And.. wtf is a shim? I noticed that being sold with the coolers..

*edit* cool the one on the review i posted is.. the sk6 lol.. :) but i still dunno what a damn shim is hehe

Shim is usually a thin piece of metal (usually copper or aluminum), tho I've seen some "non conductive" ones that look like they're made out of thick paper or thin cardboard. Anyway, they go around the die of the CPU over the ceramic part, making a larger, flatter surface for the heatsink to couple to, therefore reducing the chance of the heatsink going crooked and crushing or chipping the die. There are arguments for and against them, I personally have never used one and have never chipped a core so much that it didn't work anymore, and have never completely crushed one, though I know people that have. Anyway... I'm not going to get into the shim vs no shim battle... :D
