This is giving me such a powerful headache. Every time I try to right click or delete ANYTHING a little dialog box appears that says "Please wait while Windows Configures Symantec Antivirus" then "Gathering required information" or something to this affect and then theres an error saying to insert the CD. I have to wait like 15-20 seconds or so for this to stop so I can hit cancel every time I right click or delete something. I'm about to just erase my whole damn hard drive. I tried uninstalling Symantec, then I tried physicsally going in and cleaning up files and registry files and all the exe files I could possibly consider to be causing it. I also tried to reinstall symantec and I get a wierd error message saying it cant run the guard program and it cancels the installation. Im fresh out of ideas and Im hella desperate for answers. Any input would be greatly appreciated I have been trying to fix this for ages. I'm running on Windows XP incase you need to know. Thanks so much again for any ideas.
What version of the antivirus are you using?

I have the same problem that you described--whenever I try to cut, delete, or right click, I get a message that says "please wait while Windows configures Symantec Antivirus." And the rest just like you described in your post below. Did you ever figure out how to fix this problem? I've been struggling with it and can't think of anything else to try. Thanks.

best program i have ever used is RNAV!
Your best alternative is to reformat and start over.

do you have any programs that block the registry when you installed it?
i suggest turning off any registry programs or the like, then install it and then it should be fine.

In addition to that I would delete it in the control panel, then type Regedit from the run menu, and manually delete all the Symantec entries in the Registry keys, then reinstall the program and try again.
I once had a similiar issue and the only way to fix it was to delete it in the registry and reinstall, I confirmed this by speaking with Symantec support.

I joined this forum just to answer this question (even though it was posted exactly two years ago).
go to:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301
Download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.
Install it, then select Symantec Anti-Virus. It will delete information from the associated installer and solve this issue.
(I will now disapear back into the depths of the internet ocean never to return-- Hope I helped someone)

I joined this forum (FOUR years later) just to say thank you to the person ("User friendly") who posted the solution!
I also have an updated link to the new uninstaller: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=5A58B56F-60B6-4412-95B9-54D056D6F9F4&displaylang=en (or the article that linked to it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942288/)
All I did was download the package and run it (with reboot), and then uninstalled Symantec from the control panel again, successfully this time. What a happy relief to be free from that message!!!
