hey guys, i'm buying a video card tomorrow and I can either get the 9600xt for $169.99 or the 9800pro for $279.99(canadian) I know the 9800pro is better, but would it justify the extra $130(after tax) thanx for any opinions

if you play games then yes, you'd notice the difference. Pretty soon the 9600xt won't be able to give you a great gaming experience with the newer games coming out while the 9800pro will still have some good life left in it..... and of course if you flash the card to a 9800xt you have even more longevity from the card. if you don't get the 9800pro you'll wish you did later on.

280 sounds a bit much even tho its candian, ebay can get u a 98000pro for about 150 us dollars, still less then ur 280 if u did the conversons.

good luck getting one for 150 on egay, you pretty much gotta get lucky. Also you ru the risk getting ripped off like I did on a 6800nu from a reputable seller who for some reason turned bad and burnt 4 of us.
The 9800 pro is available for $258 at www.anitec.ca in BC
I will pm you as well about some used offers which is wise when they are BBA

Warning, Radeon 9800 Pros for less than $200 dollars are probably 128-bit ones!!! It seems that ATI likes to trick people into coughing up more money for a
Radeon 9800 Pro.

Definetely go for the 9800 Pro, it is really worth the extra money.
9800 Pros also start to overclock really nicely with a cheap ($20 CAD at most) aftermarket cooler, like the VGA Silencer.
Once overclocked a little bit, the card is beefy enough that you'll be able to enjoy most any game on medium to high detail, with some eye candy on, and smooth FPS rates.

screw ebay, you never know what your going to get. Its too unreliable for me..unless i'm purchasing something under $100, but for something this expensive, i'm not willing to take the chance. I just received my 9800pro today, can i just take out my 9000 and put this one in without and problems? or do i need to change drivers or something? thanx

I'll vouch for this. Just look at my flashmodded R350 9800 Pro. LINK (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=217813)

Untrue. Many true 9800 Pro's are sold around $190 and even less as refurbished (Around $150 on the egg) or on eBay or used from a forum.
My R350 9800 Pro was used, just look at it go. 120MHz core overclock, 120MHz DDR memory overclock.

nice OC tek, but i really don't think i wanna take the chance of frying my card, its just too risky. I just paid $320(canadian) brand new. So i ain't gonna take the chance of throwing my money away. Thats like 3 hard working days for me, and i ain't about to let that go to waste. :p

yes, is there a problem? I got it at futureshop on sale for $279.99, it came to $320 after taxes. I know there were palces in the US i could have got it for $200 or around there. But after changing that to CAD dollars, then paying shipping/customs on it. I wouldn't have saved anything in the long run anyhow. I also know there were some a little cheaper in CANADA, but they were in B.C, and the shipping prices to ontario were $15+. So that wasn't worth it either. At least this way, I don't have to wait at all and I get my 3 year warranty. I've already been gaming my heart content! :p

$279 and end up paying around $320 would be the same here in most states.
If you bought some silver with it. :D

$15 in taxes on $279? Where do you live?
I was meaning if you purchased AS5 and the card, it would be around $320 if the card was $279.

Please take sympathy on us canadians, we have very high tax, and expensive computer parts. Then again, if i ever get hurt i get free healthcare...so i guess it kinda evens out :)

Slap some shipping and customs charges onto that, and us canadians would be paying up the ass. Trust me, i've already looked into buying it from the states and getting ti shipped to me here in Canada, after all the extra charges it just isn't worth it.

the 9600s run doom 3 just fine, and that is the most intensive game engine for the pc until the unreal 3 engine gets put to use. 9600Pro plays doom 3 at 1024X768 medium-high settings very well. With the omega drivers, it can do ultra at a good 30fps.
Still, the 9800Pro is a good bit faster, I recomend that.
