View Full Version : easy cheap case mod nets 6 deg C
all i did was take a plastic cup[32 oz non throwaway ] and make a duct from hsf to outside of case
no extra psu drain
noextra noise
no extra money[well a little-should get a filter/fan guard
gained at least 12 mhz more from 1512 to 1523 stable enuff to run unreal tournament and 3d mk 2001 with gforce2 maxed out]

That's pretty good...
Do you get the same results if you just leave the side of your case off? Or do you maybe get it a bit better?
If that's the case you might want to look into getting your case cooling upgraded...or you could consider running with the case off. Having the whole case cooler is more beneficial than just having the cpu cooler because your overall speed is going to be determined by the stability of the whole system, and if the whole system is cooler, then it's going to be more stable...and will not have as many problems when it gets warmer.
If you don't have the funds to do this (and like to have your case on, as some do (having cats is a pretty good reason :))), then your duct to cpu is really quite good! :)
Happy trails!
we do have a cat. a very playful curious one and she is always on my desk try to catch the mouse literally, either the mouse or cursor. lol
so yeah i have good reason to keep my case on, besides i have it off lots as it is just tinkering and its already piling up with dust in less than a month.
also i dont have alot of extra cash to spend on a new hsf and case fans and i suspect my psu isnt strong enuff to do hard o/c ing.
but not adding extra psu drain and putting on this duct added another 11 mhz for a total of 1523 stable with a full load temp of 49 deg C in a 26 ambient with stock coolermaster hsf
and i think the cpu runs a little cooler with the duct and side cover on but the system temp is a deg or 2 higher with case on. so its a trade off but i am getting a 92 & 120 mm fan to keep everything cool soon from ajjaxx, heard of him?

Depending on the fan that you have on your heatsink now and what kind of heatsink you have, you might consider sticking a larger fan on the side of the case where you have the duct (leaving the duct there) so you get more airflow on them. Just an idea there.
I can't say as I've ever heard of Ajjaxx. Is that the store or the brand?
thats what i was planning on doing. having an 80-92 case fan blowing down on hs.
with my stock hs i will probly just remove an 80 mm case fan and have that blowing down on my hs.
i dont know its cfm but its gotta be higher than my 22 cfm 60 mm hs fan i have now. then i will replace the 80 mm exhaust with the 92 mm.[58cfm]
i will also have a 120 mm at thr front for intake, possibly running at 7 volts, as it pushes 130 cfm at 12
then since i will have an extra 60 mm fan, i mite try to attach it to my chipset hs, cuz i am trying to get my board to run past 150 fsb.

Ive been running a duct for a long time, i have good case cooling but i still get better CPU temps with the duct, if i take the sidecover and duct off my temps will rise 2C to 4C. At idle my temps will actually drop below system temps. I tried to add a 80mm fan on the other end of the duct but my temps stayed the same I think with a adapter and i high output case fan i could get temps even cooler then the Delta i'm running now but my full load temps are 29C to 33C depending on ambient temps so i'm not in to big of a hurry to change anything :)
