Hello All,
I have had much success with building Intel Computers for friends and the like and have been successful with overclocking them, but I just built my roommate a new computer with the amd thunderbird 1.4 with a 266fsb and a global win heatsink. It gives me a temperature of 71 C and this seems high and a friend said that his runs at 50 C.
Thanks for your help.

oh and i left out that i used the heat sink paste that came with the heat sink instead of artic silver II. i didn't have my box o' stuff with me when i put it together.

We need the other specs of the system.
Wow, thats hot! Are you sure you attached the HS correct? Du you have some case cooling?
You said the HS was from global win, but what model is that?

sorry about that, it is my roomies and i took a guess without opening it again.
Aopen case
Weak Aopen ps @250 watts
MSI k7t mobo
20gig samsung hd
1 stick of 128 pc133 (generic)
1 stick of 256 pc256 (generic)
Vantec Heatsink with Delta 38cfm fan plugged into powersupply
generic 50x cdrom
yamaha 8x4x32 cdrw
pci ati rage vid card
3com ethernet card
3.5" floppy
I know that this case and power supply is airflow and power defiecient, respectively. But I still question the cpu temps. I will convince my roomie to upgrade the case and powersupply in the future

the cooling was a guess that was incorrect, sorry.

that temp is definitely too high! You could fry it with temps in that range. What is the case and ambient temps? It could be a few things:
1) HS not mated properly (I'm of the opinion that if you used any thermal paste, that is probably not the issue, as I think AS2 will only drop it a few degrees C compared to other thermal pastes)
2) not enough case cooling...if the case temps are high then the cpu can not be cooled sufficiently even if the HS is doing its job properly.
3) combo of both.
I just put together a system with the same chip and now realize how hot AMDs actually run...YOW. I am running my 1.4 tbird at 43*C in bios- 34*C case temp- 25*C ambient, with a millenium glaciator and the case sides off.

You want to do something about those temps quickly. The problem with ppl I find is that if a processor still works at very very high temps they say well its ok. The truth is, they are not looking deeper into the problem.
A fact most overclockers already know is...
On average for every 10ºC higher a computer component is exposed to, it will die twice as quickly. This means that your friends CPU will live 4 times longer than your CPU. Ideally, all ppl with a 1.4Ghz should aim to get their temps BELOW 50C. I say this because about 90% of ppls thermal readouts are miles off the actual temp. This means your CPU at load could be hitting more like 75ºC. Thats only 20ºC from the maximum sustainable temperature. Any higher and you will see the magic blue smoke!
I recommend upgrading to a higher performance all copper based hsf. Most OEM hsf are rated to only ~1.1-1.2Ghz. Nowhere near the heat output of a 1.4Ghz.

I told my roomie not to run his computer and I think that the case doesn't have enough air flow. I'll also remount the heatsink and make sure that he has enough air flow.
Thanks for your help
