I've got an internet cable connection, and i want to connect two computers; one has Win ME and the other 98. I'm using a crossover cable (I think), to connect the two NICs (DFE-530TX).

Well to configure the connection in the computer with the Win ME is very easy! However when i use the disk i created in win me to configure the connection, in the computer with win98, it doesn't seem the recon the file in that disk (displays error message when it reads the file in the disk)!!! 3 questions:

1) Is this normal?
2) Can i use another method to configure win98 to connect with the other?
3) Can i connect the two computers without a hub?

Thanx! :)

If *do* have a crossover cable going between your two computers you should be just about set up...just install an program to share your internet connection on the computer that has the cable modem going into it.

If you want to share files between the computers then you have to make sure that you have File and Printer sharing set up...

Well, you can go with Window's Internet Connection Sharing, or any number of other proxy programs that you can download. There are many discussions of that in this forum, I'm sure you can find the names of a few good ones. I use a router myself, so I don't know of any.

To setup Win 98 you'll have to setup a private network...I use 10.10.10.* with the internal NIC (the one plugged into the other computer) on the cable modem box at like 10.10.10.1 and the other box as 10.10.10.2 with a gateway of 10.10.10.1 and the DNS that is set for the cable modem (check the TCP/IP properties for the NIC setup with the cable modem for them) and you should probably be set....I'm not positive, though, as I haven't ever used it. Whatever program you might use might ask you to use DHCP for it. I know that there are others here that have used these programs, so if it's too difficult, I'm sure we can get one of them to weigh in here. :)
