I'm installing win2k and I know it can automatically convert a FAT 32 partition to an NTFS one, but I'm wondering what happens to the data on said partition. Am I at risk of losing the data when it's converted?

Only if you try to access it from a win9x partition.

if you just convert it, it'll be unaccessable from any 9x os, but you won't lose anything. This is assuming you are making a dual boot machine.

If you're just converting, you won't lose anything.....

When you install it will let you select the OS partiton, they give you 3 choices,

format using NTFS file system
format using FAT32 file system
leave currnt file system alone

just select the first one and it will install s NTFS on teh partitoin that select

Win2K can also convert a fat32 to NTFS at any time after you have installed windows. You can also use Partition Magic.

I converted mine at the install stage, but I went for a completly clean install, and wiped my whole disk. Saved all my stuff I wanted onto an old 2 gig HDD and transferred it over afterwards.......
