I have seen a few threads lately asking about differences between northwood and prescott CPUs. Here is my experience with both in the same rig.

I just replaced my 3.0c northwood (Zalman 7000 CuAl CPU cooler) with a new 3.0E prescott (stock HS/F). (I am building a new PC for OC'ing and gaming using the northwood and will not be stressing the prescott for now).
With the caviat that the stock HS/F is not as efficient a cooler as the Zalman, here are the differences. From previous readings before I added the Zalman I figure it is worth about 5 deg C at full load and as little as 2 deg C at idle. (But those readings were taken in the summer with higher ambient temps) Load is using 2xprime95.

Northwood idle 38 load 54
3DMark01 18,161
3DMark03 6,660
3DMark05 2,559
PCMark04 4,697
aquamark3 46,309

Prescott idle 43 load 62
3DMark01 18,904 (+740)
3DMark03 6,807 (+140)
3DMark05 2,551 (-8)
PCMark04 4,900 (+200)
aquamark3 46,445 (+140)

*Most of these benchmarks are vid card dependent (9800 pro 128 flashed to XT).

Conclusion: Prescotts run hotter by about 3 or 4 degrees and perform a little better at stock speed (L2 cache is 2x the 3.0c). Nothing new, but now I have seen it with my own eyes.
Recommendation: Get a prescott (which is cheaper) and use the extra money to get a good CPU cooling device.

Hmmm... When I got my 2.8E 3DMark and other benchies were actually LOWER across the scale compared to my 2.8C except for memory benchmarks. You are prolly using newer drivers and maybe SP2 since you took the 3.0C readings during summer?!

Your right, Cat 4.7 DX9b and SP1 during the summer but two of the benchmarks were done right before I did the switch with Cat 4.9 and DX9c. I conceed that the higher numbers for 01 and aquamark could be due to video driver upgrades. The one that is not is 3DMark05 which did go down. I might have to rethink this.

had the exact same experience

The Prescott's start to pull away at higher clocks, so overclocking these things is a must to stay competitive with the Northwood counterpart. I drew the same conclusion, the Prescott's were slightly better than the Northwoods, and even more so at higher clocks.

i believe that even clock for clock the prescotts will beat the northies in certain things like encoding and cache dependant programs (things like super pi or seti) but in other things the northwood holds a lead up to a point which is what the majority of popular benchmarks show
