Greetings,

I have been using Linux for some years now, and
I reckon that it sucks. Yeah it's fine that I can
configure exeverything. Which was why I decided to
build my own LFS dist. Anyway I still think it
bites, the kernel is not premptable the deadlock policies are not good. NFS also sucks. I want SFS but anyway. After completing a few research papers into operating systems, I reckon OS's like
BeOS and things like NeXt (which apple were way ahead of their time, but failed to market it propoerly). Anyway BeOS gaurantees a respones in 250usec or something like that. That's awesome. I would like to try BeOS but will it support sound and an AGP card?

Also any commmnest on Solaris 2, MacOSX and Gnu HURD. Also Ameoba, MACH, Andrew amd Sprite, i alos
would like to try a fully distributed OS on my network.

Fisco.

I love Mac OS X. Now, you have to keep in mind I have access to newer versions of OS X than the public gets...nda reminder to myself....OS X 10.1 will rock. Everything people were bitching about with 10.0 when it was released will be fixed. I think about 90% of the issues are taken care of NOW. I also run OS X server 10.0 and really think it's got exciting possibilities. It's definitely a first release because there's some quirkiness to it.

All in all I think OS X will keep Apple around a long time because it is a Unix OS and it looks good to the average Joe.

Have you tried downloading and installing Darwin from Apple? It's on Apple's opensource page.

The GNU hurd is still a bit too ...eh... it isn't ready yet.

Solaris seems quite good, although it is very similar to linux, only really the kernel is different (possibly the process management as well.

I do agree that OSX is one sweet OS. 10.1 does make a hudge difference over the current 10.04 It is based on free bsd. The gui is the finest of any linux/unix distro I have seen and if it could be ported to the PC I would drop kde in a heartbeat. This OS has some real potential in the future when it matures a little and has more native apps.

Not sure why you are not to fond of linux and its networking. I don't use NFS here I use Samba. With Samba I get around 7meg a second transfer rates between machines I don't see any problem at all with that!

BeOS is quite nice to up untill OSX came out I thought it was the best consumer OS available to the general public. It is Unix based with great stability, speed, and unmatched smp support. It is just a shame that it didn't take off so that there would be more apps, now it is destined to die out which is really to bad.

I believe that OSX has been ported to the PC and is available from Apples open source page, there was a post about this a while back.

The core technologies "Darwin" was ported but the hardware was severely limited. It's basically the command line stuff without all the sweet goodness that is aqua

At the core Apple is a hardware company. It would not be wise for them to port OSX to cheap PC hardware and put themselves right out of the hardware market! You will never see OSX for PC :(

I have just installed BeOS. It looks really kewl, and it seems to emulate the MAC style a little.
I feel that Mac X is basically the linux kernel
rehashed. It's kewl but not the future. Mac X
is basically an OS with more more added features?
Anyway BeOS has one major benefit in that it is exteremely responisve and very small.

What do you guys think about what operating system will dominate in the next ten years.

Linux will be the future, it just may take a while to get there.

Microsoft is slowly killing itself with it's lack of new features and pricing. Basically in a soft market they don't want to lose money so they're making up in price what they cannot do in volume. I'm reading more and more about companies switching to Linux solutions to keept their hardware running instead of upgrading Microsoft's software.

Mac oS X is based of the mach kernel, Linus Torvaldis basically stated in his book that he didn't like the mach kernel because it was monolithic. There are a surprising amount of open source software being ported to OS X, this is really starting to pick up.

BeOS doesn't seem to work with my USB mouse/kb

I believe that osX is based on BSD kernel, which is UNIX. Linux kernel is NOT unix. It does (at least it didn't originally) not contain UNIX code!

Hold on a little minute, I thought the mach kernel was a MICROKERNEL. ie. not monolithic?
