View Full Version : How do i measure the voltages on a powersupply with a multimeter ?

I think i need to buy a Digital multimeter, will anyone work. How do i measure the 12v 3v and 5v voltages on a power supply ?

You can measure the 12v and the 5v through a molex connector from the PSU. The 3.3v line you have to measure from the ATX plugin to the motherboard.

ok i got a $16 DMM from Ace hardware, now what do i need to set it to to read the voltages ? where do i plugg the red thing in cuss it has 2 pluggs one that says 10A DC, and another that says Vma and some headphone looking symble between the V and MA.
I changed the thing to measure DC 20V, and when i put the black wire into the black wires on the molex, then the red wire in the yellow one i got alot of sparks and my pc shut off, it turned right back on, but what did i do wrong ?

Those 2 slots i mentioned my DMM has for the red wire which one do i plugg the red wire in ?
