View Full Version : Overclocking 9600XT
I just got a shiny new Abit 9600XT 256MB with vivo (LOVE IT). What is the best program to use to overclock it? Overdrive doesn't let you adjust the core. I have seen programs like Powerstrip, Rivatuner and ATItool. I have read some posts, and I am just wanting something simple(like coolbits). Please forgive me I just switched from Nvidia and know very little about ATI.
Thx :burn:

I'd be careful. My little brother has fried TWO 9600XT's. He's had the arctic silencer on them and at stock speeds, they're fine but not more than a week after overclocking each one (and I mean just by mabey about 30 or 40 mhz on the core and 25 or so on the memory) the card died. I could't figure it out. He said that the screen would go blank and the monitor would go into powersave mode. If he rebooted the machine, it would start up but the machine wouldn't post and the monitor wouldn't come on. He swapped out video cards for an older geforce and the machine fired right up.
He's had two 9600xt's die the exact same way. he had the coolers installed correctly. They were nice and tight on the gpu and the temps were rock bottom. so now he's got two dead ati's and using a geforce 2 gts.
download the omega drivers. they come with radclocker/ atitool. both are extremely simple to use.

Thanks FastRedPonyCar, now you got me scared. Although Abit makes a quality product, I'll take it easy at first and see how it goes.
thats weird!
thats also the reason i try to buy my cards off newegg.
they're rma program is unbeatable!
they'll pretty much RMA anything if you've bought it within the last year
all you have to do is the INSTANT rma apporval online and send the package 1 way..
What kind of clock are you guys getting on this card?:santa2:

I've got a 256MB 9600XT running at 564/357. It's water cooled with heatsinks on the mem. I haven't tried going any higher for a while, this seemed pretty good already.

What's a good level to stop at with Air cooling? I'm going to be OCing mine shortly, and I fear doing damage to it. What's a good level to stop at?
Just stop when you get artifacts. If your afraid, get some sinks on it. There cheap and they work.:burn:
