Ok Im getting ready to buy a router...so far I think the Dlink's is the ebst choice, but dunno which one it the better choice.

Dlink DI-704 @$79 = shipping(comes with a $30 MIR valid thriu 9-30-01)**scratch that just realized the $79 price WAS price after the rebate..)*** !!!guess ill get the 804 unless you all say otherwise.

or

Dlink DI-804 @ $84 +shipping(no mention of any type of rebate)

Opinions as to which is best deal...im really leaning towards the 704 with the rebate, but if the 804 is alot better I can easily live without the $30 rebate.

Thanks for any info

I have the DI-804 and love it.

Furthermore, I can save you $5... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005ML8V/qid=999802385/sr=1-1/ref=sc_e_1/104-5417686-3061541

No problem :)

If you do get this router check the tiny switch on the back of it...mine came with "Uplink" set as the default. Uplink is for when you attach a hub to the router. Be sure to set it to "Normal" if you are using it as a switch.

The setup is easy as pie, too. Just be sure to RTFM :D

A note about ICQ file transfer (and possibly other means of file Xfer): if you have the firewall on (default) it blocks the Xfer. It doesn't even show up on the screen, it just gets blocked by the firewall. There is a way to turn it off (Called DMZ mode, I believe) but you're only allowed to run DMZ on one machine at a time. This might be a big deal for you, but it's not for me. Just a little heads-up.

Can you turn DMZ off and off fairly easy or what? I beta test ALOT and pull various files off the net(benchmarks, demos etc). How does it affect those?

The firewall doesn't effect downloading files. Through ICQ, the other user sends files to my computer and it sees those as intrusion attempts. Normal downloading is just that--normal :)

DMZ is easy to turn on and off, but requires that the router be rebooted (takes about 2 minutes)
