Defragmenting

Would there be any advantages to using a 3rd party defragmenting software (for some reason norton system works does NOT work on my computer :-/)

But anyways, should I just keep using windows defragmenter when I defrag? If not, someone recommend me one thats really good. Keeping in mind I have 480 gigs of storage, all accessed lots. And lately Ive been re-organizing crap on my drives.

I wouldnt see why the defrag that comes with windows wont work, just use that. Dont forget to to disk clean-up after the defrag

The Windows defragmenter actually uses the DiskKeeper engine...albeit a stripped down version of it. I believe they moved to that with Win2k.

The stand-alone version of it does include many more options, as you've mentioned, and is a very good defragmenter.

I agree, windows defrag is good. There is no reason to use a third party software like diskeeper. Unless you are lazy and need the scheduled defrag options.

i like having it defrag while i sleep, so it doesn't slow me down when im using photoshop or something like that when im using a huge scratch file

O&O Defrag has worked the best for me, but now i just use XP's defrag because i don't really care about the few mb/s i gained :P

I thought you were suppose to disk clean up before you defragged. Have I been backwards all these years? (we're talking DOS & 286's here)not to date myself or anything. Also are you not suppose to run scan disk prior to defragging? :)

i always ran disk clean up before defragging too.... and in xp i don't think you have to run scan disk... or its done automatically.

My expirence has been that if you try to run scandisk in XP it will not run at that time but rather ask you if you want to schedule a scan at next boot up. Not sure if XP does a scandisk before defragging, I think it does on a system crash, maybe some else can elaborate here. So what I do is, clean, scan(maybe overkill but oh well) & defrag.

I do not believe scandisk is a member to a Windows XP operating system.

Right click a hard drive
Properties
Tools
Error Checking


Scan Disk .... error checking maybe just a different name but the same action me thinks.

Diskeeper (http://www.executive.com) is by far the best one I've used. Here's the best order to do things in:

-- Delete all temp files (c:\windows\temp\*.tmp)

-- Delete temporary internet files (c:\windows\temporary internet files\*.*)

-- If you use I.E., click on Tools, Internet Options, Delete Files, select "delete all off-line content", click OK

-- Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, Systems Tools, Disk Cleanup

-- Download AdAware (http://www.lavasoft.de), check for updates, run it and remove whatever it finds

-- Download Diskeeper (http://www.executive.com) and defrag

You can also do this, to help keep your system clean:

-- Download, update and turn on SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) and SpywareGuard (http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html).
