I need MS WORD & I do not want to buy WORKS SUITE 5.0 just to get WORD.

It is for my wife and I must get WORD. I would get more use out of XP Upgrade from my W2K PRO for the same cost.

WORKS 5.0 $99
XP HOME Upgrade $99

just need to know if XP has WORD built in.

thanks'

Mike

No, Microsoft Word is a seperate Application. I don't think that you can buy it on its own though.

No, It is not in XP and it is not in MS works. You must get Microsoft Office. You might be able to get a good deal on Ebay for an older version if you do not have XP now.

There is an alternative that is open source and free that looks a lot like MS Office called Openoffice. Check it out at openoffice.org

Why does she NEED MS word. Abiword is better than it and completely free.

becaue she has work to do at home online that uses the MS WORD ****. unless these other programs will allow her to do her assignments and whatever then anything else is useless.

I dont know. I need to ask her more but at the moment I am going by what she told me her freaking teacher told her.

this is for nursing school BTW

word can be purchased seperately
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000BZ54V/qid=1099712423/sr=8-2/ref=pd_csp_2/102-7498190-0270525?v=glance&s=software&n=507846

but i believe MS works 5.0 does come with a full version an is only 100 dollars.

What do her assignments consist of? If it's something like "How to use Word 101" or something, then obviously OpenOffice or Abiword won't help her much. If it's something that she needs so that she can type up stuff as homework or something, then any of the alternatives listed will work fine.

If Word is absolutely needed, you can buy it like others have said. If not, you can download a (free) alternative which will open and save Word documents. See if you can get any more info from the teacher or your wife about what she's going to be doing with it.

Just to lay any doubts to rest about what is contained in MS Works.

http://www.microsoft.com/products/works/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=001

Word 2002 is in there. As far as I know it's the only product from the office suite that's in there.

You can still use Office XP if you are on Win98 for example, I used to do it. Now I have Win XP Pro, with Office 2003Pro, and it works. There are just a few more features if you have a later OS, but they grey them out I think, correct me if I'm wrong, its been a while.

You might want to tell your wife to look into software discounts because she is a student. Microsoft as well as Adobe offer special college discounts for a lot of their software. I know someone who got some major discounts buying software because they were a student. It would be worth looking in to.
