Anyone think the current raptors will be compatible? Also will the new standard Serial ata 300 drives outperform the current raptors? Interested in getting another one, but if newer drives will kick ass...i might just hold off.

I wouldn't doubt for a second that SATA II is backward compatible with SATAI. Meaning your Raptor will work on a SATA II board, though it'll only be running at SATA I spec.
I don't know about the rest.

The newer drives will probably outperform the old ones due to changes in the drive, not the interface. Higher bit densities on the media will automatically translate into faster transfer as more sectors are moving under the head at the same spindle speed.
So I would expect to see the internal transfer rates move up with the new generation of drives along with the new faster interface. And tom10167 is correct, the SATA group always intended to speed up SATA along the way and make it backwardly compatible. Eventually they even want to get rid of power cables and make the data and power come from the interface if they can every get the drives to run on 1.5v.
